Atkins Diet post #1  quote:

I just started the Atkins Diet three days ago and I feel very sluggish and out of it. I just want to sit when normally I am on the go. I have done everything right re: the induction period. Does anyone know if this lethargic feeling will pass or is this something I have to get use to?

Kim,

It will pass...make sure you exercise everyday, at least for 15 min to 1/2 until you can do more...but pace yourself!

Every winter for some reason, I get lazy and add about 15 lbs...I dont know why...I have a treadmill but I dont use it until Feb, and then I stop in Oct....a habit I guess! LOL

Anyways..the first week is the hardest, but you will find after the 2nd week it gets better. ONLY stay on this for two weeks, three at most, and start raising you carb intake...if you have the book it should tell you..if not I have it and I can tell you. (I always forget and have to refer back to it every end of winter...)

This diet has never failed me...but I run two-five miles a day on the treadmill...so that helps...Within two weeks, I have always lost that added 15 lbs, and kept it off all summer and fall. But again, Im in MO, and with the snow and cold...I get lethargic and lazy. I need to take up skiing or something!

Anyways...stick with it and if you have any questions let me know. again, you will feel better after the 7th day and the first 7 days are the hardest...make it through that, and your halfway home!!!

Of course thats just my opinion....I could be wrong. (Dennis Miller)

Atkin's diet post #4  quote:

According to the book this a normal feeling at the beginning and it should disappear and you should actually feel better. I used to take a nap for 20 minutes everyday in my classroom and now I don't.

Jim, you are right. I am a diabetic. And since I have been on this diet my blood sugars have been almost normal. The best I have had in almost 30 years. I have now lost 24 lbs.

Jim I see that you are in England. I was born outside of Glasgow and my parents lived in Sidmouth in the south of England until my dad died and then my mom went back to Scotland. I hope that your sister is improving. It sounds like she has some pretty serious problems. Is she insuling dependent? I am. I kind of think it is easier to control when you can use insulin and nowadays the new insulins make life easier. I just saw my doctor yesterday and I thought that she might be annoyed that I was doing Atkins however to the contrary she was pleased and encouraged me to continue with the low carb lifestyle as long as I do not get to thin. Are you on this diet too?

I am in England, but I am from the fingerlakes area of New York. I am in Liverpool, well out side of it really more twards St. Helens/Warrington. Okay I take that back Widnes, but I really don't know my directions that well around here.

Any ways my sister useto be on insulin, but whith her bypass she is just on oral meds. I guess her measurements have been in the 130 to 140 range. That is a big improvement from her being in the 200's. My mom is a nurse and I think it makes her feel better.

I am on the diet just started in the induction, but I am finding it hard to stay away from the carbs. I haven't had any pasta, but I have had the bars and shakes and I hope this doesn't ruin it for me. I find them filling and a big help when I have the cravings, but I am worried cause they have surger in them. It isn't much and there is more fiber than there is surger or carbs, but they count at 3 or 2 net carbs I can't remember. I also don't eat read meat, but I do do the fish and chicken and any other seafood, or polutry thing. I've not noticed any change yet, and I think I am being inpaitent.

Well talk to you soon,
Jim

Jim, I am surprised that you are having trouble staying away from the carbs. This is the first time that I have tried to lose weight that it has been easy, simply because I am not hungry. I think that bars do have a lot of calories in them so you might want to stay away from them just for the first couple of weeks. Have you been eating bacon and eggs for breakfast? That will really fill you and hold you. My first two weeks I had that or I switched off on the link sausage that was already cooked and I just had to heat in the microwave. At lunch I would have a big salad and put an egg in it and maybe half an avacado (are these expensive for you?) At night I would eat quite a lot of meat and one vegetabel and a small salad. I always keep diet jello on hand and I have some of that spray cream that you can have a little of. Also, we do buy the Atkins candy. We like the ones that are similar to kit kats and after dinner my husband (he is doing it too) and I share one. it is not much but it satisfies my need for something sweet. Now that I have lost so much I am eating more carbs and my doc has recommeded that I switch to South Beach as they allow the good carbs. I can buy bread that is only 7 carbs a slice and that now makes a good breakfast with two pieces of sausage like a sandwich. I am also walking a lot. I try to get in two or three miles per day. Now my husband has still lost about 10 pounds even though he can't excercise much. He has MS so walking is difficult. Jim if you want to you can reach me directly at janie.marks@verizon.net

Thanks for the help. I told my friend today that I thought about going off it. I haven't yet, but I am just hungry. I think it is cause I like the taste of foods. I am not really hungry I am just missing the foods I like. I will stay away from the bars, but what about the Shake??? That fills me up at times too. I have been dong good and well I did have turkey bacon and eggs ( I don't eat prok or beef I usto be a veggy and I can't stand beef or port tastes bad to me) any ways that did good, and then I baked a turkey roast and had that for a snack that has tided me over till now. I am takeing the spulements too so I think that is helping some. I usually have a bad will power, but I think being able to eat something is good for me. My partner thinks I have lost weight, but since our scales are in Stone I really can't tell. He says that they seem to have moved.

Okay well I will be in touch.

Thanks Jim

Of course you can do this. Remember there are 14lbs to a stone. Not too hard to compute. If your partner seems to think that you have lost weight then you likely have, after all he is the one who sees you every day. Don't give up too easily. By the way I hate the shakes. I don't like anythink milky. For me it is easier because we are both doing it. Can you talk your partner into doingit with you. Everything is easier when you have some support. I know that you can do it.,

I really don't mind the shake I wish I could find diffrent flavors in the powder. I've tryed the ready made vianilla and strawberry, so any ways My partner is in very good health and I don't think he needs to loose weight, but maybe he will do the low carb maintiance. He has been very good though in supporting me.

Any ways thanks for the support keep it coming.

Jim

The only way diabetes was treated up through the 1950's was with a low carb diet because it was considered the healthiest. So even if your partner does not need to lose weight it is still a good way to eat and suportive of you. My doctor does not want me to lose more that about 5 more pounds as she says that at my age being too thin could cause me bone problems. By the way my husbands name is Phil. What is your partner's name? Janie
