"Necessity is the mother of invention"...we dont *need* oil. Our current society is dependant on it because of the way we use petrolium for plastic, fuel, and other byproducts. However, if it came down to it, we could find alternates to these things, or we could combine which types of fuel we use.
I may be speaking out of ignorance here, and there may be aspects to this issue that I am unaware of, but as far as I can presently see, the US needs to look to other sources of energy aside from petrolium, which we are attempting to aquire through war.
