Memorial Service Today for Gerald Levert

Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin are among those who will be taking part in today's service for Gerald Levert. Others expected at the event to be held at Cleveland's Music Hall include AngieStone, Brian McKnight, Angela Winbush, Johnny Gill, Keith Sweat and The Dells. Organizers of the event are asking those mourners to wear purple, Levert's favorite color. Levert died last week of a heart attack at age 40. ALSO: Two Cleveland city councilmen are asking that a downtown block be renamed in honor of Gerald Levert. Councilmen Kevin Conwell and Joe Cimperman will introduce a resolution Monday to designate East 25th Street between Superior a nd St. Clair avenues as Gerald Levert Lane. The block was chosen because of its proximity to Cleveland’s Radio One stations, which frequently played Levert’s songs. The area has had lots of visitors since Levert’s passing, teeming with those wishing to pay homage to the late singer.

Emmitt's Opportunities

"Dancing with the Stars" champ Emmitt Smith is a hot property these days, and now insiders are reporting that Smith has had discussions with at least one major studio about hosting his own talk show. Apparently, some execs feels that Smith's "likability" will translate from the dance floor to daytime ratings.

STAR JONES FINALLY GETS A JOB

We thought this day might never come, but Star Jones Reynolds has reportedly snagged a gig as the executive producer on a new TV show that will focus on Black America. She says, “We are doing a full look at the issues, the people, the conversations that were held in Black America, something that has been a project that I’ve always wanted to do." Star says that her show will air on TV
One, a cable/satellite network that’s geared towards African Americans.

Tom Threatens Caterers

Caterers for Tom and Katie’s wedding have 'allegedly' been threatened with a hefty fine from the couple if they dish out what's on the ceremony's menu... to the media Cruise has reportedly made staff at his favorite Rome restaurant, Dal Bolognese, sign a contract promising to keep quiet about the menu or pay $935,000.

Jamie Foxx Surgery

Jamie Foxx is recovering after a regular check-up prompted him to go under the knife to have a gland removed from his neck. Foxx was told a parathyroid gland wasn't functioning properly and would have to be cut out. The parathyroid controls blood calcium levels in the body and if it's failing to do its job, it can affect the nervous and muscular systems in the body. The secret surgery took place last month and Foxx is said to be recovering well after his initial panic.
A source says, "Jamie was a wreck before the surgery because he hates not being in control."

Dreamgirls Nightmare Ticket Price

The distributors of the movie "Dreamgirls" reportedly plans to charge $25 for the first 10 days that it can be seen in theaters, beginning on December 15th. The $25 ticket will reportedly buy a reserved seat, a 50-page color souvenir program, and a lobby exhibition of costume and set designs. According to Paramount studio's website, moviegoers will also have the opportunity to purchase exclusive merchandise and the film’s soundtrack in the lobby. The film will be shown
without commercials or coming-attraction trailers, and there will be only one showing per evening, with an added matinee on weekends. A Paramount rep says,"We wanted to bring it to audiences in a special way, and we think this does the film justice."

Graceland Hosts Tribute

Graceland is finally putting on its own Elvis impersonator contest. Technically they are not "impersonators", but "tribute artists". Elvis Presley Enterprises will produce its first ever official Elvis tribute artist contest. Contestants will be chosen through existing contests and through new ones conducted at fairs, festivals and other venues. The finals will be held in Memphis during Elvis Week next August. Details can be found at Elvis.com.

He was such a great vocalist, and a pretty good writer and producer. It may be selfish, but my main thought is I hope he's got plenty of unreleased stuff to keep me going...
