Chameleon is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.
About
Battling ChameleonChameleon appeared only in the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC versions of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. On the Nintendo 64 version, he is replaced by Khameleon, a female version. There is little information about Chameleon. He has the appearance of a male ninja with partial transparency, and he has no backstory or game ending. All that is known about him is garnered from the hidden option to fight him (available upon beating the game). He is referred to as "one of Shao Kahn's deadliest warriors".
He is playable, but only by selecting one of the other seven male palette-swapped ninjas (Rain (purple), Reptile (green), Noob Saibot (black), Original Sub-Zero (blue), Ermac (red), Scorpion (yellow), or Human Smoke (grey)) and holding a certain combination of buttons. This combination is "Away"+"High punch"+"High kick"+"Block"+"Run" regardless of platform. The character then becomes Chameleon, and switches between the seven ninjas randomly. Upon winning, Chameleon will flash through all seven colors rapidly during his victory pose.
Storyline
Chameleon may be part of the Saurian (aka Raptor) race, of which Reptile and Khameleon are members, but this has never been conclusively stated in any game, and is purely speculation on the part of the fans at this point. If in fact he is a Saurian, that would mean that Reptile is not the last living male of his species, as is thought to be the case.
Chameleon is similar to Reptile's first Mortal Kombat form, in that he has no moves of his own, but rather has the moves of the ninja he is emulating. Where Reptile was named for being green, Chameleon was named for his color changing and camouflaging, similar to a real chameleon.
It has been confirmed that he will make a return in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Also, in a recently released select screen, Chameleon appears to be in the first row of selectable characters between Ermac and Noob Saibot. Chameleon is also pictured in the updated "full cast" render for the game.
Trivia
Chameleon, as seen in the MK:A cast renderIt was later discovered that Chameleon was playable in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Sega Genesis using a Game Genie code.[1] He was an unfinished character, as he used Scorpion's sprites (his sprite would change to Rain's when a decapitation Fatality was performed on him), and had no combos, special moves, or Fatalities. His versus screen picture was that of the typical male ninja made up of multiple glitched colors, and curiously, his picture on the "Choose Your Destiny" screen was that of Kano.
In a recent video of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, it is shown that during battle Chameleon will continuously change colors between the ninjas and his body will be transparent.
