Blaze is an elemental of Outworld (not to be confused with the gods) that embarked on a mysterious quest. The details of Blaze's quest are unknown to date. As his name and appearance suggest, Blaze has some control over fire, though the extent of his abilities remains a mystery. Making his first chronological appearance in Mortal Kombat II, Blaze was visible only as a burning figure in the Pit II background, fighting a character fans have since named Hornbuckle; upon close inspection, this Blaze was little more than a palette-swapped version of the Jax character, with flames covering its upper body. Many years later, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance featured Blaze as one of its secret characters, along with Mokap.
Story
The mysterious Outworld elemental known only as Blaze had long been on a quest throughout the realm. During his quest, an ancient sect of holy men still serving the long dead Dragon King ambushed him on a bridge. The holy men enslaved him through mystic incantations and forced him to protect the last known Great Dragon Egg. For many years, he has remained submerged beneath the molten rock of the egg's incubation chamber as its guardian.
However, during the course of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, the chamber of the egg was infiltrated by Cyrax, Nitara, and Reptile. Nitara used Cyrax to reach the chamber, where she separated the vampire realm from Outworld before leaving. Reptile, however, came seeking revenge, and found only the dragon egg. At this, it hatched, sending the essence of Onaga into Reptile, making him the vessel of the returning Dragon King. Blaze was finally freed once the dragon egg had hatched. He then resumed the quest he had undertaken before being subdued by his captors.
At the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, or Eł, Blaze's in-game biography for the upcoming Sony PSP port of Deception entitled Mortal Kombat: Unchained, was revealed. Having existed for millenia, his quest had been to monitor the strength of the world's warriors. Blaze's creator (mentioned as being female) had foreseen that should they become too powerful, they would threaten existence itself. It was thus Blaze's role to call out, awakening his creator's sons once this time had arrived. One of these two brothers has apparently awoken prematurely.[1]
Possible Future
Blaze's ultimate fate is unknown for the time being, but he is slated to make a return in both the upcoming Unchained & Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. It has additionally been confirmed by series creator Ed Boon that Blaze will be the main boss for Armageddon.
Blaze's apparent appearance for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.Early renders of Blaze in Armageddon show him as having a much bigger and more "powered up" appearance than he did previously in Deadly Alliance, including a ninja style mask, and it has been confirmed that Blaze's new appearance will be explained during the Mortal Kombat Armageddon opening cinematic.
Trivia
Midway could not use the name Torch, because it was already a registered trademark for the character the Human Torch from The Fantastic Four.
Blaze, along with Mokap, was a secret character in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. He could only be unlocked after completing the lengthy Konquest Mode and unlocking his Koffin. To fight as him, you have to press and hold down the start button while selecting Raiden.
Because of his lack of a Fatality and no weapon fighting style, Blaze has been considered to be a somewhat disappointing and mid-tier character even though he possesses top-tier fighting styles.
"Hornbuckle" and Blaze bare a very strong resemblance to Aarzak and Garokk from an obscure game called Last Battle, which was released on Sega Genesis and was based upon the popular anime Fist of the North Star. "Hornbuckle" resembles Aarzak after he has powered up although was just a pallete swap of the Liu Kang sprite used for the main game itself, while Blaze resembles Garokk who was also wreathed in flames and wore pants but no shirt.
Design concepts from the MK A Krypt showed pictures of Blaze with hair on his head and two axes for a possible weapon stance.
