SAN FRANCISCO - A 2001 investigation into child pornography charges against John Mark Karr turned up no clues clearly tying him to the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey, according to the Sonoma County sheriff.
"We have not been sitting on evidence that was so obvious or so clear that this person committed this murder and we didn't do anything about it," Sheriff Bill Cogbill told The (Santa Rosa) Press Democrat for a story Monday.
Karr, who went to high school in Hamilton, Ala., was arrested in April 2001 on five misdemeanor counts of possessing child pornography. Karr remained in Los Angeles County jail Monday after police detained him on a warrant from Boulder County, Colo., He arrived in California from Bangkok, Thailand late Sunday.
The sheriff's remarks came after a woman described in court documents as a police informant said she exchanged e-mails and taped more than 20 hours of phone conversations with Karr shortly before his 2001 arrest.
Wendy Hutchens, 49, most recently of Roseville, said Karr discussed details surrounding the girl's death.
Cogbill would not verify Hutchens' account, citing the Boulder district attorney's ongoing murder investigation. But he said he expects to speak with Colorado authorities this week.
"They want to look at all the evidence we have pertaining to him and see how it relates to their case," Cogbill said.
