THE STAND!!! I've read that book, once a year, for more years than I can count. I absolutely love this story... and never get tired of reading the book, or watching the movie.

I haven't read the Dark Tower series yet, and maybe a couple of others, I don't remember... those 4 impressed me the most.
We should also do a Worst Stephen King Book thread. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Delorus Clairborne go right on the top of that one for me.
Rose Madder sucked so bad, I didn't even read it.
Actually, I read a few of his short storys that were so terrible, it hurt to read them. One, Cain Rose UP, made me sick for a couple of days. To horrific.
The other, the Long Jaunt, or Juant or something, I read before going to sleep and it gave me nightmares. A kid in that book, fakes sleep, so he can see what it's like to travel through a teleporter. If you are not asleep when you go through, you spend eternity trapped, unable to move, just staring into nothingness. Uh!!!!!!!!!!
I went to bed, and dreamed of that poor kid, stuck year after year, after year, looking at nothing. And I started thinking about how long it would take to go insane with something like that.
I have tried to read Needful Things a few times, can never get past the first few chapters. Other than that, I normally enjoy his books and re-read them after awhile.

Horrific I can deal with. I usually read writers with less of a conscience than Stephen King as it is. Much less... so I may check out those short stories you mentioned
Rose Madder did suck though. Needful Things was alright... a lot of his books take some work to get past the first few chapters.

The Long Walk was horrific, but I couldn't put the book down. Read it almost in one setting.
I read the Bachman books. They're all pretty good, I think. I forget which one Long Walk was... something like they had to walk and walk and walk and they'd get shot if they walked too slow? Or was that another writer?

yeah, the Long Walk, was like walking survivor. Whoever fell below 3 miles an hour or whatever it was, got shot by Army Dudes. The winner got a big cash prise.
Our hero wins the walk, but is completly insane at the end. I guess the book is really about how we all face death. The kids reacted in different ways to dying.
Would make a terrible movie, but the book was awesome.
