There was a recent, widely reported story about how a Veteran’s Administration employee, without authorization, took home a laptop, which was later stolen from his house. It was reported that the identities, including name, address, and SS numbers of up to 50 million people were on the laptop. It was also reported that the identities have a street value starting at $100 each for mass purchase, and going up for smaller quantities.
Why hasn’t anyone wondered whether the guy who took the laptop home might have sold the data for say $50,000, and then just made up a story about it being stolen in order cover his tracks?
You might say that he could have just as well have copied the data and sold it without telling anybody, so why make up a story about the stolen laptop? But knowing that the stolen data would be used to commit identity theft, he would need a cover story to explain how a lot of data that was under his control suddenly got into the hands of identity thieves.
