You heard it here first... after I heard it from TVGuide.com... who reported it from Variety:
Battlestar Spin-off Goes Frak in Time
Sci Fi Channel has announced its plans for Caprica, a Battlestar Galactica spin-off set 50 years prior to its original series. Battlestar's Ronald D. Moore and David Eick will executive-produce the new venture, and Remi Aubochon (24) is penning the script, Variety reports.
Not sure what to think! I mean, the concept sounds cool... will this be around the time of the original Cylon uprising? Can a show based on Caprica alone be cool?
The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot - a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the 'Battlestar Galactica') 'Caprica' weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga.
So Bill Adama will be pretty young... in real life Edward James Olmos is 59. So they could have a pre-teen Billy Adama running around.
Prequels that deal with characters who you already know the fate of kind of sucks though. Like with the SW prequels, you knew certain characters could not die or suffer too many life altering character twists.
Plus, we're going to have a show based on a world that is going to get nuked all to hell in 50 years.
Hmmm... well, in the mini-series of BSG, when the officer is sitting in the space station, like they do, each year, waiting for a cylon to show, the voice over says that it's been 40 years since anyone has heard from the cylons. So, this spin-off will take place 10 years before they "disappear"
I don't know how well it will do... I mean, we're still waiting for season three to start. Is it too soon? I will watch it, because it's BSG... and hopefully they will air it during the off season of BSG!

Yeah, maybe it is too soon for a spin-off. But Sci-Fi wants to milk the show for all it's worth. Hell, even lame Stargate has a spin-off.
The prequel will be very limited to what it can and cannot do. I would almost rather watch humans getting into trouble on another one of the colonies, present day. Dunno, maybe that would suck.
But it will be young Bill Adama. And whoever their friends are. Family drama though? I want some Cylon ass kicking. Oh, they have to use the old Cylon toasters, too! Sweeeeeeeeeeet.
I bet that there will be some cylon ass kicking. But, they are laying the foundation of their creation, and their eventual desire to leave, and rule alone.
