Sunday, April 2, 2006 — Downtown Albemarle will come alive Tuesday night with the glorious sounds of Joy Almond and Brooke Garcia.
The talented 2005 Albemarle Idol and runner-up will each perform 30 minute sets at The Square, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Square will be blocked, with the stage set in the middle of Main and Second streets.
“We encourage everyone to come downtown and enjoy these local performers as they share their fantastic talents with our community,” said Vicki Coggins, executive director of the ADDC.
Chris Lambert will be announcer for the hour-long concert, which is sponsored by Crook Motor Company.
As with the past several weeks, First Street from West Main to West North Street will again be blocked for another Kellie Block Party as Albemarle’s “American Idol” continues her run to be “American Idol.”
This week, Pontiac Pointe is serving as the host restaurant and presenting their “Kellie Calamari” while JD Shuckers and The Boardroom Bar & Bistro will again be offering up their Kellie specials.
As before, Eli’s will be open with free refreshments and a wide screen TV.
“We are expecting out of town visitors Tuesday night, as CT Communications are assisting with the promotion of this event,” Coggins said.
CTC spokeswoman, Carmen Pearson said, “In support of Albemarle’s excitement over Kellie Pickler, CT Communications is establishing a CTC Wireless ‘Pick Pickler’ phone bank, where fans can text their votes for free.
“For those that have had difficulty through, the text messages will get straight through, so please plan to stay after American Idol ends and text message your votes for Kellie. CTC Wireless staff will be on site to assist excited fans with voting.”
This past week has seen a transformation of downtown Albemarle to a sea of “Kellie Hot Pink.”
“We want to extend our appreciation to everyone who has worked so hard to decorate this community,” Coggins said. “Kellie is aware of our support and hard work and is very appreciative of everything we’re doing.”
American Idol had a film crew in Albemarle Friday, interviewing Grandpa Clyde and Brother Eric Pickler while also filming the sea of Kellie’s Hot Pink
Although this has been posted numerous times, I suppose we need to do it on all the boards.
A store in Albermarle, NC (owned by CT Communications) has set up a text messaging phone bank where people can vote for Kellie for free. This company (CT Communications) is a telephone provider in west-central North Carolina. Their cellular stores are RESELLERS for Cingular, like Best Buy and other stores.
Cingular does not control them. They do not control Cingular. The store where the Kellie Pickler voting is taking place is owned by CT Communications and no one else.
There is no conflict of interest, just a retailer using this to drum up business and support their hometown idol.
I don't see anything wrong with people doing this in her hometown. They are showing their support. While I'm not a fan of hers, and don't want to see her go any further... I think that it's great that they are showing their support for a hometown girl.

Well, come on, Sherry... you and all the SP are dialing to vote for Tay, for two hours, or more, every single week. People do it.... vote numerous times, for their fav. It's not right... but, until they change it, that will continue to be the trend.
Personally, I wish that there was a way to make it so that only a set number of calls can vote for any one contestant, each night. Like, 1 call for the contestant, and then, you can call and vote for another. The numbers of calls/votes are so high because people are making tons of calls, per contestant. How is that a true vote?
I'm not complaining... I vote, multiple times, for Chris. But, everyone else is doing multiple votes, that there is no choice, or your favorite might be sent home.

Oh I am not saying that I think it is wrong. If AI is cool with it, then it is all good. I was just surprised that a company sponsored it. You can get in around 500 texts per phone and they are supposed to have 300 phones.
AI likes people to call in a ton of times. It makes the show look more popular than it is. It is the way the system is designed. If the fans did not power vote, then there is no way someone good would win.
