It is a fact that is often forgotten, but when Rudolf Diesel created the motor that now is called from his name, he intended to use it to burn fuel like vegetable oil.
Most diesel engines are now burning fossile fuel.
Lots of modern motors can however be powered with vegetable oil instead of gas oil from refineries. It does work fine.
Not only it is possible to save money (at least in Europe where oil is very expensive) but the environmental balance is much better:
- cancerigenous particles emitted by the combustion of gas oil are almost no more
- greenhouse gases generated by the combustion were previously taken from the atmosphere by the plants producing the oil-rich seeds through photosynthesis: since no more fossile fuel is burnt, the corresponding quantity of gases is no longer released in the atmosphere.
- vegetable oil is a better lubricant than gasoil: the motor makes less noise and lasts longer.
