Was it ever explained how this magical behind-the-scenes world came to be? Why they all live in secrecy? Why only unicorns, ogres and all that exist there?
You know, I don't ever remember there being ANY explanation as to HOW/WHY the magical world of HP started. I think that JRK would have to go back, and do stories of earlier characters, and put stuff like that in.
I would LOVE for her to do a book on Dumbledore... his life. And a book on Harry's father, and pals, while in school. But, I don't think that she's interested.
She could continue writing about that 'world' and make a killing... because people would buy it.

Yeah, it's kind of like: here it is. Don't know why, but here you go. That would be the first question I would have, why do you people live in secrecy? Is this some kind of cult? Are you going to try and sell me Amway?
See this is why I like writing Fanfiction for Harry Potter, because very little of the history is explained so it is a blank slate.
I am much more of a Tolkien fanatic that Harry Potter but because Tolkien went to such lengths to create his world and its histories it is hard to fit any new stories in without going into the future of middle earth. Where as the Harry Potter universe is easy because you can do whatever you want to the history of the characters and their world just so long as you leave enough of the main points that are described.
I'm sure that someone somewhere knows but until that knowledge is released the history of the Harry Potter world is still very much open to Fanfiction writers like me.

Yes... but Tolkien created a completely different world. It didn't take place in some remote country on Earth. Harry Potter is modern day, Earth based.
But, I would love to have a lot of back story on the world of magic these peeps live within.

They cast spells, Heck, which makes things look different. For instance, if a muggle were to go within eye sight of Hogwarts, they would see a run down building, and land that looks messed up, run down, etc...

The wizards live in a world separate from the muggles, like Heck , because if it were known that they could do magic, then the muggles would forever be pestering them to find solutions for all their problems. JKR answered that a long while ago.
Wizards and Witches were common place in Britain in the times B.C. and they co-existed with the Romans. When the Roman left Britain to fend for itself there were many wars but the wizards still were allowed and accepted, in some cases fears and revered.
In the time of the mid 500's A.D. when King Arthur was around Merlin was the greatest of all wizards. At this time most of Britain was Pagan but Christianity was growing. Merlin, being a Pagan wizard, waged a secret war against the Christians which, ultimately, he lost.
When Merlin died the wizards and witches were hunted by the muggles who believed them to be a abomination before the eyes of the Christian god and so the Wizards separated from the Muggles, never again to live in peace with them.
And this my theory as to the reason why Wizards live separately from the muggles and also the reason why Purebloods look down upon, hate and fear (to an extent) the muggle-born Witches and Wizards
((I have used Bernard Cornwell's Arthurian stories as a template to this theory. Those books are 'The Winter King''Enemy of God' and 'Excalibur'))
