I know there are die-hard old school BSG fans, but in my opinion these two shows are worlds apart. This new one is probably one of the best sci-fi shows of the past decade. The old one was a post-Star Wars cheesy 80's show that could have been a lot better. Thoughts?
You know, I followed the original BSG, like a religion. And to this day, I still love it. BUT, the newer version just kicks serious boo-tay! And, Lucy Lawless is a cylon! You can't do any better!!!

And aside from the obvious advances in special effects, I think the writing on this show is really well done. To be fair, the effects on the original where really good for the time. Actually, that's mostly the reason the show was cancelled, it was too damn expensive.
Also I think that in post-9/11 era we can grasp the premise of the show on some levels. Plus it's not showing a super happy Star Treak future. It's just a knock down drag out fight to live, with some hot nuedy robots on the way.
The old one came out when I was pretty young so I don't really remember it, but as I watch reruns I can see the 80's cheese factor a lot. This new one is super serious, the other one was like Starbuck and Apollo trying to get some nook all the time. Cylons were cheesey with the robo voice, but it worked. They are really, very different, to be sure. Other than the premise and names it's a totally different show.
I wonder if they should 're-imagine' Star Trek in that way. Wonder what it would be like?
Yeah, but the Cylons also sounded like that light up circle game, Simon. Remember that?
A new Trek show could be more gritty, have the universe not so full of roses and tribbles. I'd even have more aliens, like half the main cast would be some kind of alien. And not cheap aliens that look identical to humans, like Counselor Troi. I want big makeup and wigs, like a bad drag show
Did you ever watch the A-Team? You know Dirk 'Starbuck' Benedict played 'Face' on the show. Anyway, the A-Team went to Universal Studios in one episode (in reality the dumb show was filmed there so it's not like a stretch) and at the time on the Universal tour they had a Battlestar Galactica portion (which I went on as a child, thanks.) Well Face walked by a couple of Cylon's and gave this funny look at them and kept going. Good times.
