What can we learn from the major events that the characters have gone through before they ended up on the island? Maybe by making a list we can see where they/the writers are going, or at least we have a new thread.
Locke-tricked by his father into giving up a kidney then dumped by the dad. Lost the use of his legs.
"Man is a marvelous curiosity ... he thinks he is the Creator's pet ... he even believes the Creator loves him; has a passion for him; sits up nights to admire him; yes and watch over him and keep him out of trouble. He prays to him and thinks He listens. Isn't it a quaint idea." Mark Twain
Michael - Helped create a kid named Walt, the mother took him away, convinced him to sign him away, only to get him back 9 years later after the mother died and the only father the kid knew didn't want him.
Please pardon my pseudo-intellectuaphilisophicalismysiticality.
Sun - Married Jin, finds out Jin's doing her father's dirty work. Plans to leave/escape Jin, yet changes her mind because of a flower.
Jin - reluctantly accepts a job with Sun's father so he can marry her. Finds his work horrifying, but goes along with it out of fear of her father's wrath. Is threatened before getting on the doomed flight.
"I'm for it so we can put Nuclear power plants up there, and then beam the power back to earth on a laser beam." ~ Whidden

Kate - we know that she buried a "time capsule" box with her boyfriend, and they dug it up, years later. She was on the run... probably from something else she did, that we still don't know about. Her mom was in the hospital, and was terrified of her daughter. Kates "love" Tom was killed when they were escaping from the hospital. She tricked a bunch of guys, to rob a bank, but all she wanted was what was in safety deposit box 815... Tom's toy airplane. She was hunted down by a marshall, and over a few years, would call him, and taunt him, according to the marshall himself in a flashback.

Jack saved a woman in the hospital, though, how is still unknown. She was able to walk again. He married her (but was it because he was in love with her, or because he felt bad for her being dumped, etc...) He refused to lie to the board, at the hospital, and cover for his father operating while drunk, and killing a patient.

Shannon and Boone - step siblings. She calls Boone up, pretending to be getting beat up by some guy. Boone flys to Australia to "save" his sister, but it was a set up to get money. The guy took off with $50k, and left Shannon. She shows up at Boone's hotel room, and confronts him on his feelings for her... and well, they do the "deed" *shivers* (So not right... because even if they aren't blood related, it gave me the creeps)
So, Boone is in love with Shannon, and VERY protective of her.
Shannon has a history of stringing along the wrong men, and getting money by scamming.
