soccer and racism post #1  quote:

Last week I watched a HBO real sports special about soccer and racism. They had Thierry Henry on the show. He was talking about going to play in stadiums where they make a monkey call at the black players. I had NO idea that things like this went on around the world. I got the impression that Spain and Italy were pretty bad about such things.

Thread open to discuss soccer and racism.

It happens more in European football than in British football. I remember last season a coach of either Spain or a spainish club said something racist about Thierry Henry and was dealt with very quickly by the FA.

I was very lucky in my club because for the last few season I had the man who made the 'Kick Racism out of Football' campaign, Shaka Hislop. Mind you it would be very hard to have a racist team or racist supporters down here at Portsmouth, what with the majority of our team being from other countries and of all racises and colours.

Ron Atkinson was very unlucky really. He is one of the old managers who used to say thing that are considered racist now but weren't back when he was a manager and he was caught buy ITV. Back when he and Jimmy Hill were managers they used to insult their black players and get insulted back, it wasn't a big deal.

I think most of it is blown out of proportions now anyway. If you say something slightly racist the media will jump on it, mis-quote you in some papers, and you'll be labled a racist for the rest of your days.

It can be very unfair.

What happend when Englands blck players were abused with monkey chants in Spain was terrible a lesser team would have walked off, then a few months later Aragones ( Spain manager) made racists comments about Henry. Spain and Aragones who kept his job BTW recieved a small fine for the chanting and the comments. If anything this proves that FIFA or EUFA are not taking it seriously. Aragones should have had the book thrown at him and if he made those comments in the UK hw would have been fired instantly. Spain should have been forced to play behind doors but that might have ciost FIFA money.

To be honest in Scotland we don't have much racism in the game back in the 70's black players used to get bananas thrown at them and other deplorable acts. The racism has gone bur unfortuantly it has been replaced by bigotry with the old firm team being the worst offenders. The old firms teams have had to launch a bigger the bigotry campiagn which is working as the chants about the pope and King William seem to be getting less and less thankfully.
