The "shaft" was the last stand. Where Morpheus put his gun down and walked out to the sentinel. And he said "He (Neo) fights for us" or something. They blew the giant shaft to make it smaller so it would force the sentinels into a "bottle neck." The shaft/tunnel was the way into the Temple and that was the last stand where all the Zionists had retreated. The sentinels were about to make their move but they froze up because like I said. Neo was going to fight the battle.
