MARIAH CAREY VISITS "THE TONIGHT SHOW"
Mariah Carey was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday to promote her new album The Emancipation Of Mimi and perform her new single We Belong Together. Mariah and Jay talked about Carey's "cocktail dress", swimming with dolphins in Australia, Mariah-isms, and fans getting tattoos of her - including one who appeared on People's Court. Read on for a transcript.
Jay: My first guest the biggest selling female vocalist in pop music. [screams and applause] Here's her new cd right here. "The Emancipation of Mimi" debuted recently at number one. We'll talk to her first and then she'll perform later. Please welcome, Mariah Carey. [screams and applause]
Jay: Wow, great dress. You look great. [cheers and applause]
Mariah: Amazing. [cheers and applause]
Jay: Guys have two reasons to applaud. That's nice.
Mariah: Very nice. Amazing crowd. [cheers and applause]
Jay: Would that be, a cocktail dress?
Mariah: I don't know. I heard you serve cocktails here.
Jay: We do have cocktails. But I always hear women are looking for the perfect little black cocktail dress.
Mariah: This is an Alaia.
Jay: Not sure what that means but it works.
Mariah: A designer who makes it. And I guess it's a cocktail dress. I don't know.
Jay: It looks...
Mariah: If I have a cocktail later I guess. [cheers]
Jay: Hey, you know, I found this out. You're in the guinness book of records. This is pretty amazing. Explain.
Mariah: There's a couple of different...
Jay: I know one is...
Mariah: No, no. I'm like, I don't even know, because it changes every year.
Jay: For the highest note ever recorded.
Mariah: That was for the performance in the super bowl.
Jay: Okay.
Mariah: That's amazing. I'm just honored to be... [cheers and applause]
Jay: Wow. Were you consciously going for that record?
Mariah: No, no. I had no idea what the record was. But it was like you know you can, you're doing a performance and it's like, I can either do the last note of the star spangle banner that's always that... the "free" note. I might as well go up a little bit.
Jay: Yeah. [cheers and applause] Here's a really dumb question. This shows how little I know about music. They say you always, like, watch these movies though go "ah!" And the glass would break. Does that really happen?
Mariah: Oh, I don't know. There was a story, though, about this girl and this was told to me. So I wasn't there. So I can't say if it's true or not. But it was told to me that there's a little girl who was playing one of my records over and over. And this actually would be interesting for you, because I know you have. I don't know how many cars is it?
Jay: A few cars.
Mariah: A couple cars. So, a few cars. Anyway this was a regular garage maybe two-car garage. The girl was... kept playing the record over and over. And her mother didn't realize she was doing this and saw the garage door kept opening up every time the high note would hit. She thought somebody was playing a trick on her. But it turned out the note was activating something in the thing. I don't know. [cheers and applause]
Jay: And any guys with pacemakers.
Mariah: I would hope not.
Jay: The only other... only a dolphin can hit that note?
Mariah: That's what they said.
Jay: Ever think of swimming with the dolphins and...
Mariah: I love swimming with the dolphins. That's my favorite.
Jay: Have you done that?
Mariah: I have. First time I did it was in Perth, Australia. It was fabulous. I try to go all over the world wherever I can. I didn't realize that about the note with the dolphins or I would have been trying to...
Jay: You could have been talking. Are the male dolphins more friendly than the female dolphins?
Mariah: They say you have to be very careful when you pet the dolphins because, you know, like all beings, they reproduce. And you have to be careful where you put your hand...
Jay: Like all guys, you mean?
Mariah: Well, okay. You know.
Jay: They get excited.
Mariah: A little, yeah. [Jay imitates dolphin, laughter]
Jay: Now, let me ask you about this. You're on the cover of "FHM" magazine. [cheers and applause]
Mariah: I like the pictures on the inside better than the cover. I love the people. They were very nice. It's just not my favorite shot. You know how you cannot like certain shots of yourself.
[woman in audience: "You look beautiful", cheers and applause]
Jay: This one over here.
Mariah: I like that one.
Jay: This one here, this is your communion... [cheers]
Mariah: Well, it wasn't my communion. But it...
Jay: Your first communion shot.
Mariah: It's for the guys you know. [Jay imitates dolphin] It was a lying down, you know, moment that's more relaxing.
Jay: More relaxed.
Mariah: Yeah.
Jay: Now this one here, this one I know, see... both straight guys and gay guys like this one. [cheers] Straight guys like the pose. And gay guys like the outfit.
Mariah: Yeah, the ensemble, right.
Jay: There's one more. Oh, this one here. Now, apparently you have a lot of... is that moths in your closet?
Mariah: Could be the moths. Could be the moths. I don't know.
Jay: They're all beautiful pictures. Look, I tell you what. We'll take a little break and we'll talk right after this. More Mariah right after this. [screams and applause]
Jay: Welcome back. Talking with Mariah Carey. I was reading, you know, I was reading the article here, and in the article, you said, well, you did these pictures because you thought you had, like, a... what was it? A Mary Poppins kind of image?
Mariah: No, I don't know. ...I did the pictures. No, but I have said that about Mary Poppins, which is more just about me in terms of, I'm not really... I mean, I do take a little sexy pictures and stuff like that. But my friends make fun of me because I'm very much Mary Poppins when it comes to, like, you know, little topics of conversation. I'm kind of a prude, believe it or not.
Jay: Really? Wow. You know, you really could have fooled me. [laughter]
Mariah: I know, I fooled them all. Whatever. It is what it is. [cheers and applause]
Jay: So basically very innocent?
Mariah: Well, I guess. I guess so.
Jay: 'Cause you also said in here you always have to teach men how to kiss? What is that?
Mariah: I haven't read the article yet, so I don't know that I did say that.
Jay: Okay.
Mariah: But I know that I said it because people have told me that I said it. [light laughter] But what I really... more than teaching men how to kiss, it's more like a social thing, where... let's say you're
at a party.
Jay: Okay.
Mariah: And you know, you're a a female and you've gotten yourself together. You know, you're dressed, you got your makeup on and stuff. And then, like, some guy who's hanging out dancing, sweating, drinking, comes up, and he'll give you, like, a huge kiss on the cheek and your makeup is completely a wreck.
Jay: Like I just did when you walked in?
Mariah: No, you were good. Because you know, you're a pro. [laughter] But most of them you have to teach them... [cheers] No, but it's true. I mean, the guests would be upset. So you have to teach them, just a
little simple, the air kiss, like we did. Like of the little... [cheers and applause] Like that. And then we save the makeup, but we get the closeness. You get familiarity. You know, it works.
Jay: So that's SK, safe kissing.
Mariah: SK, ooh, we like that.
Jay: Safe kissing.
Mariah: SK.
Jay: Well, that's like... 'cause I know you have your own slang. Don't you? You have a whole lot of, like, Mariah slang.
Mariah: Kind of. Well, it's just like, you know, I'm sure you and the guys here have, I've heard about it, notorious actually.
Jay: Well, guys always have...
Mariah: Hand signals.
Jay: Yeah, guys always have some kind of, you know, for example... [laughter] Even men. Like, a guy from Ethiopia could walk in here, who doesn't even speak English, and he would go... [laughter] And it
just...
Mariah: Exactly. Those would be jayisms.
Jay: Those... no.
Mariah: Manisms.
Jay: Mariahisms, we call them.
Mariah: Right.
Jay: So what are some of yours? What are some of yours?
Mariah: Oh, dear. Well, that's one of them, the "oh, dear". They make fun of me because I say the "oh, dear". But it happens when it's like, you're at a loss for words. And then I think there was... I said, you sort of throw a a little vibrato at the end of it just to really emphasize it when you're really feeling like, you know, sort of against the world, like I'm feeling right now. You just need to let it out and just go, "oh, dear". [laughter]
Jay: Kind of like... more like aunt bea or something from "Mayberry". [laughter] "Oh, deary." So you have one, like, let's suppose you're talking with a girlfriend and, like, just the cutest guy in the room walks in.
Mariah: Right.
Jay: And you want her to know but you don't want him to know. Is there any word that...
Mariah: Yeah.
Jay: Like, what would that be?
Mariah: You would say hot tamale. [cheers and applause]
Jay: Even I would know what that means. That doesn't...
Mariah: Or we could just say HT.
Jay: Or, HT. Well, sure, sure. Okay. And, you know, you have some dedicated fans. I met some earlier today.
Mariah: Yes. [screams and applause] I do.
Jay: A lot of people... a lot of your fans have you tattooed on their body.
Mariah: It's amazing. I really have the world's best fans.
Jay: Show this one here. What is this first one? That guy, all right, there you go.
Mariah: Oh, it's in color, too.
Jay: Yeah, that's not bad, okay.
Mariah: But can people really tell that's on a guy's arm, though?
Jay: I hope that's his arm. [laughter]
Mariah: Oh, dear.
Jay: Better be his arm or we're in a lot of trouble. [laughter]
Mariah: Exactly.
Jay: No, some of them have gone overboard, haven't they?
Mariah: Um...
Jay: I'll tell you, did you ever see an episode of "People's Court"? There was a guy who had apparently, he had you tattooed on his body.
Mariah: Yes.
Jay: And he felt the tattoo artist didn't do justice to you and was suing because his tattoo was not as beautiful, do you know this story?
Mariah: I saw it. Somebody taped it for me because I didn't believe them.
Jay: Right, right. [laughter]
Mariah: And so I saw it. And it was just... it was interesting.
Jay: Yeah, it was odd.
Mariah: No, it's an honor that somebody would do that, but I couldn't believe it made it to "The People's Court". [laughter] Growing up, I watched "The People's Court", and I'm like, I'm on "People's Court" as a a tattoo. [laughter]
Jay: Now, look, I know you're going to go change and do something, and then you're going to sing for us when you come back.
Mariah: Yeah. [cheers and applause]
