Jack and Locke have battled before about differing opinions, leadership roles, etc. I think because of his contempt with Locke Jack assumed way too quickly that Locke hurt Boone on purpose. In fact, Jack doesn't know at all whether or not Locke was even a little responsable for what happened to Boone, all he was told was that Boone fell off a cliff. Because of his readiness to think that Locke was dangerous he overlooked the obvious: if Locke had really done that to Boone on purpose, why would he bring him back to camp? No one knew they went off together, Locke could have come back and the castaways might have assumed That Thing in the Forest got him. (hey, I just found another connection to Lord of the Flies with that! I'll go to Whidden's Insane Theory thread next ). Also, Jack seems to have forgotten how close Locke has become to Boone. Locke killing Boone would be like a father killing his son.
I really hope the gunshot isn't deadly! Locke can't die, too!
"Man is a marvelous curiosity ... he thinks he is the Creator's pet ... he even believes the Creator loves him; has a passion for him; sits up nights to admire him; yes and watch over him and keep him out of trouble. He prays to him and thinks He listens. Isn't it a quaint idea." Mark Twain
I don't know, if you watch the first episode it shows Jack as Superman. He could do everything! Surely he could take Locke! Right?
No, I won't even pretend to cheer for Jack. I got sick of him really fast, but after all he did for Boone he's not awful. All the same, I hope Locke wipes the floor with him.

Whidden said this in post #5 : But still, he ran off to worship his hatch.
What? He did not! He went back to let out his frustration and yell at the island. The hatch is his visual connection with the island, so that's why he went there instead of yelling at his legs or something. He knew he couldn't do anything to help Boone, that was Jack's area of expertise, so Locke went to the hatch for answers and to be alone with his misery. NOT to worship it.

I hope Locke kicks Jack's butt, but I hope not TOO seriously. Just enough to utterly humiliate him. They need a doctor there and Jack's the only one they get.

Honestly, honesty's a fable in love.
isnt this exactly where you'd like me?.
i just kinda give....
If Locke DOES die, like the previews suggest, all millions of disgruntled Locke fans will have to decide between stop watching the show in anger or protest, or to keep watching to see just what the consequences of Jack's actions are.

You're right, the writers said that only one main person would die. He could be mortally wounded and slowly die and by the end of the season in a few epsisodes be not quite dead yet. Hahaha, reminds me of Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail: "I'm not dead yet!"
