LOS ANGELES Mar 25, 2005 — Jennifer Aniston filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on Friday, court papers showed. The petition filed in Superior Court seeks dissolution of the actors' marriage based on irreconcilable differences.
A long-rumored split between the "Friends" star and the "Ocean's Twelve" star was confirmed in January when they released a joint statement saying they were formally separating.
The couple married on July 29, 2000, and have no children. It was the first marriage for both.

Calls to Aniston's attorney and to Pitt's publicist were not immediately returned Friday evening.
In her divorce petition, Aniston asked that her maiden name be restored. The actress took Pitt's name legally when they married but continued to use Aniston professionally.
Pitt, 41, and Aniston, 36, began dating in 1998 after being set up on a blind date. They were married on Malibu bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Part of Pacific Coast Highway was shut down to accommodate the influx of the 200 guests.
Among those who attended were actress Cameron Diaz and most of Aniston's co-stars from "Friends."
Until rumors began swirling that the A-list couple were about to split, there were near-constant tabloid rumors that Aniston was pregnant. The actress had said she and Pitt eventually wanted to start a family.
The two remain co-owners of the Plan B production company with producer Brad Grey.
Aniston shot to fame on "Friends," which ended its 10-year run last year as one of television's highest-rated comedies. She also has starred in such films as "Along Came Polly," "Bruce Almighty" and "The Good Girl."
Pitt's career includes "Ocean's Eleven," "Fight Club," "Meet Joe Black," "Seven Years in Tibet," "Sleepers," "12 Monkeys," "Legends of the Fall," "A River Runs Through It" and "Thelma & Louise."
Brad Pitt has handed the $14 million Hollywood mansion he shared with Jennifer Aniston to his estranged wife.
The movie hunk reportedly has scrapped plans to sell the home, which took the former couple two years to renovate, because the "Friends" alum would like to make it her own.
According to People magazine, Aniston asked Pitt for the home before filing for divorce from the actor last week.
Jennifer Aniston refusing to answer questions about Brad Pitt
Jennifer Aniston is reportedly refusing to conduct any major interviews for fear of being asked questions about her break-up with Brad Pitt.
The former 'Friends' star and her heartthrob husband recently filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences and sources claim Jennifer is so traumatised by the split she wants to avoid talking about it as much as possible.
A source said: "Jennifer will not be talking about it any more. When she promotes her next film she will refuse to allow any questions about Brad. She is unlikely to do any major interviews because she would have to talk abut it and she doesn't want to."
The comments came after Aniston's first interview since the break-up when collecting an award in Las Vegas. Choosing to focus on the public reaction and the support she had been given, Jen avoided mentioning Brad directly.
She said: "There's always going to be the rough and the nasty, and you just tune out from that because for some reason, people have to do that."
The thing is, you can't revell in the spotlight together and love all the attention when everything's fine and dandy and then shy away from the spotlight and refuse to do interviews when everything falls apart.
You either want the fame or not, you can't pick and choose when you want to be famous.
I think the only time they revel in the spotlight is when they're "working" like red carpet events and such. Other than that, they seem to run around hiding from the paparazzi. I seriously feel sorry for these guys, but I'm sure the millions upon millions of dollars they have makes up for it

Imagine if Brad Pitt came knocking on your door asking for a cup of sugar... you'd probably comply.
But with news of his move to Malibu, Brad's new neighbours will be just as showbiz, with Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn on hand for provisions. Bless Brad, he's certainly not hanging around after his split with Jennifer Aniston and has purchased himself a cliff-top retreat for $9million.
It's reported that he's agreed to give Jen the home they shared in Hollywood as part of their divorce settlement. So Brad will be picking his socks up from under the sofa and taking the removal vans to his new beachfront pad.
Apparently he fell in love with the house after seeing it featured in architecture and property magazine Distinctive Homes.
He gets three bedrooms and four bathrooms, as well as a 70ft swimming pool, for his money. Plus, he can boast to his pals that the house was used as the setting for a murder in actress Kyra Sedgwick's new TV show The Closer... not that his celebrity neighbours will be that impressed.
About the pic of their house: it's kind of big, but it doesn't have my breathing room on either side, does it? And from the top, it kind of looks like a tin-roofed shack
I'm sure it's gorgeous from the ground though...
