Madonna leads tour earners
MADONNA'S Re-Invention tour was the highest grossing world tour of 2004, according to Billboard Boxscore.
Twenty years into her career, the 46-year-old star earned $US125 million ($164.89 million) in box office earnings from the tour which ended in September, selling out 55 out of 56 shows, according to Billboard.
Prince's Musicology tour took second place, drawing near 1.5 million people and earning $US90.2 million ($118.98 million). Country star Shania Twain was third, grossing $US62.5 million ($82.44 million).
The remaining tours in the top 10 include Simon and Garfunkel with $US59 million ($77.83 million), Metallica with $US53.8 million ($70.97 million), Bette Midler with $US53.3 million ($70.31 million) and British stars Sting with $US52.4 million ($69.12 million) and David Bowie with $US46 million ($60.68 million).
The Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the top engagement of the year, with their three nights at London's Hyde Park in June grossing $US17.18 million ($22.66 million) and drawing more than 258,000 people.
Canadian singer Celine Dion earned $US77 million ($101.57 million) from her residency at Caesar's Palace casino in Las Vegas this year, but Billboard said it was not a traditional tour.
