Signs of Colonial surgery on skull fragment post #1  quote:

Signs of Colonial surgery on skull fragment

A skull fragment found in a 400-year-old trash pit at Jamestown contains evidence of the earliest known surgery -- and autopsy -- in the English colonies in America, researchers say.

Circular cut marks indicate someone attempted to drill two holes in the skull to relieve pressure on the brain, the researchers said. The patient, a European man, died and was apparently autopsied.

Cool. Though it seems a bit presumptious to say that a surgeon was trying to relieve pressure in the brain. This implies knowledge of what goes on inside the skull and concepts preventative medicine. How would they know if the holes were being drilled to save a life vs. post mortem curiosity?

Smile; It confuses people.

maybe, indeed - unless they were practicing with a skull drill on a dead guy to see if they could drill into a skull without everything falling apart - I mean you need to try it once in sort of an exercize before engaging in the "real deal" I would think, no?
