Hippocratic Oath: Do doctors still take it?? post #1  quote:

I didn't even REALIZE this, but when I did a spell-check to be sure I typed "Hippocratic" correctly, I decided to follow up with actually READING the oath itself...

I came across this:

"I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art."

When I originally thought of posting this thread, I was thinking along the lines of "I won't cause further harm due to my actions". I didn't even KNOW that there was actually a part of the Oath that speaks against abortion...

My question still stands: Do doctors still TAKE the Hippocratic Oath? If they still do, then SHOULD they, since they perform abortions?

Ok, I wasn't looking at the MODERN Hippocratic Oath... I was looking at the original, which isn't used anymore... They've taken out the politically charged parts, and tried to still keep the essence of what the oath represents...

Still, doctors who took the oath came to the point where they developed the abortive method... Question still stands... Why bother with an oath?
