Why was Umbridge so eager to fire Trelawney? She was very upset when Professor T. was not made to leave the castle? Is she really evil? Is Umbridge working her own agenda or someone else's?
I actually think that was the one incident that Umbridge was doing her job properly.
Trelawney is quite a bad teacher and the decisions regarding Trelawney that Umbridge made were actually acurate except how she chose to get rid of her.
It could be nothing to do with the proficy, Umbridge might not know that there is one.

The Prophesy is in the Ministry of Magic, I'd gather she'd know of it's existance. I don't think that she was really that evil, but her devotion to the ministry, and her own thirst for power were probably motivating factors in her control over hogwarts. The truth is, in regards to Snape, McGonnigal, and other teachers, it was hard to find a reason to fire or discipline them. Hagrid and Trelawney, on the other hand, were easy candidates to show her "power" to everyone else.
She's just Crouch, in a small, more compact body. Exercise power as much as possible. Try to prove who's in charge. She really was working the ministries will, and though the ministry was probably influenced by the older Malfoy, I don't she was aware she was doing the dark-lord's will by being there...

She wasn't doing her job properly, because would you stand in the middle of the Entrance Hall and tell her she was useless? And the inspections weren't fair either. I don't like Trelawney, but she wasn't doing her "proper" job, she was just getting rid of the teachers too close to Dumbledore.
