I'm re-reading The CoS and I came across something that confuses me! Lily was a witch and James was a wizard so that would make Harry a pure-blood right? Then why does Tom Riddle say this: "There is a strange likeness between us Harry Potter [...] Both half-bloods" (page 233). Why would he say this??? Have I misunderstood the whole pure-blood concept? Do you need a whole wizard family to be one? And what impact does it have on the explanation of the title of book 6? Could other people who we ruled out because we though they were pure-bloods be half-bloods be the prince? Or does this say something about Harry's parents? or did JK make a mistake???

annasmit welcome to the forum. Most pure blood wizards count back generations of all pure bloods. Harry's mother was muggle born, so Harry is only a half-blood. Voldemorts father was a muggle, his mother a pure blood, so he is also a half-blood.
Ok, but isn't that a bit weird. If you apply that rule there are only a few people that are pure-bloods and pretty much anybody could be the half-blood prince! Which makes me think about Neville again. His parents may be a witch and a wizards but do we know anything about his mother's background? If she was muggle born he could be the prince.

Ok but what about this: The Longbottoms are pure-bloods but Neville's mother wasn't always a Longbottom... So it was never said whether she was from a pure-blood family! I guess I would just really like it if Neville played a bigger part. I liked how he became more together (so to speak) in book 5.

in chamber of secrets neville says he will be attacked and then rom or someone says no he wont hes a pure blood, but neville says hes practically a squib. Hes not a half blood
This is what JKR responded to a similar question on her website:
The expressions ‘pure-blood’, half-blood’ and ‘Muggle born’ have been coined by people to whom these distinctions matter, and express their originators’ prejudices. As far as someone like Lucius Malfoy is concerned, for instance, a Muggle-born is as ‘bad’as a Muggle. Therefore Harry would be considered only ‘half’wizard, because of his mother’s grandparents.
She also explains it's similar to the way the Nazis singles out the Jewish in the war. In a way you could say that Voldemort is similar to Hitler because rumour has it Hitler's grnadfather was Jewish and we know Voldemort's father was a Muggle.... interesting stuff!
