NEW YORK - CBS apologized on Sunday for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake tore off part of Janet Jackson's top, exposing her breast.
"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received several calls about the show.
The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast.
The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.
Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson's breast.
"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."
Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."
The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.
"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.
"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."
MTV issued a contrite statement, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."

What could be more shocking than having your nipple whipped out in front of millions of people?
IT might be rebadged the Super Boob next year after Justin Timberlake sent the half-time Super Bowl show into X-rated territory by tearing off half of Janet Jackson's bra.
After two touchdowns in the real game, the evening's "top-down" came at the end of a show headlined by Jackson and including the wild man of pop - who was the show's secret special guest.
The stunning stunt appeared to have been planned all along, with Jackson sporting a strategically placed star over her right nipple, which had been exposed to the watching millions as the duo sang Timberlake's hit Rock Your Body.
Later it was confirmed that CBS, which broadcasts the Super Bowl and half-time show, had approved the tear-of strip, but were forced to apologise to their audience after a flood of complaints from family viewers about the smutty sing-along.

Hip hop star Nelly had rapped through his hit Hot N Here only moments prior to the incident, and the lyric: "I am getting so hot, I'm wanna take my clothes off", appeared to have been taken literally by Jackson and Timberlake.
Indeed the last line Timberlake sings in the song is: "Gonna have you naked by the end of this song," and he very nearly did.
The half-time show was as extravagant as ever, and the crowd played its part, drowning out much of the performance - which also included P. Diddy and Kid Rock - with their cheers.
Jackson started with her hit All For You before P. Diddy launched into Bad Boy For Life ahead of Nelly's contribution.
Kid Rock shredded his vocal cords in characteristic fashion with a rendition of Badwitdaba before Jackson returned to sing Rhythm Nation before the duet with Timberlake.
The pre-match show also treated fans to a feast of music, with Aerosmith, Willie Nelson and Toby Keith performing as well as Beyonce producing a rousing national anthem.
Honestly the boob thing wasn't shocking to me, as much as the fact, that Janet Jackson hasn't evolved as an artist one bit! I loved her CONTROL album and her RHYTHM NATION album as well. BUT...her half time show was lame as Hell! Same lip-synching! Same old wardrobe! Same old style! She used to put on this ( I am so shy act ) and critisize Madonna for sexual antics over the years, but at least Madonna is a true artist who evolves moreso than any other female performer I can think of! Janet...you are being too transparent for me.

I love Janet and think she has evolved heaps as an artist since the Rhythm Nation days. MusicFanFL, did you see/ hear the Velvet Rope Album/ Concert Tour? That was amazing, she really gave new life to her old songs and her new songs were fantastic.

Ms. Jackson’s right boob was detained under a little-known provision of the Patriot Act which enables the government to detain celebrity body parts that make surprise, naked appearances at nationally televised sporting events.
Under that provision, Mr. Ashcroft explained, Ms. Jackson’s right boob will not have access to a lawyer and could face a military tribunal at some point in the future.
When asked about Ms. Jackson’s left boob, Mr. Ashcroft said that it is not a suspect at this time but that it remains “a boob of interest.”
“We would like to know if the left boob knew what the right boob was planning to do,” Mr. Ashcroft said. “It strains credulity to imagine that the right boob acted alone.”
Elsewhere, experts around the world confirmed that moments after Ms. Jackson’s right boob fell out of its housing, Western civilization fell as well.

Who is running CBS, Mother Teresa? If they want to apologize, it should be for acting like showing a half-second flash of a covered nipple is the crime of the century. These guys cry and cry and cry over the nipple-flash but DON'T SAY A SINGLE WORD about all the groping, grinding and sexually charged dance routines. Funny that I don't hear any PARENTS complaining about that either.
People in this country need to quit acting like every little thing that happens needs to be turned into a titanic-sized issue. I say everyone should stare at a bare nipple until the "OH NO YOU DIDN'T" effect wears off.
