I have already heard the Patriots calling themselves ''World Champions''. Should they be allowed to do so until they have at least played a team fom another country?
Im slightly confused over what else they would say.
The football league consists of 2 conferences: the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference)...
I dont know if they are saying "world champs" in the sense you may be referring to...but in the sense of the combination of the two conferences of national and american...
Make sense?
Of course thats just my opinion....I could be wrong. (Dennis Miller)

But mys ... "world champions" connotes an international contest, which it isn't. And even if, because of the conference titles, they don't want to call themselves "National Champions", which technically is what they are, why not call themselves the United States Champions ? After all, they ARE the Patriots.

I dont know...maybe I just dont look into that deeply...
So what...they say world champs? In the long run...does it really matter? Must everything have "political correctness" to it? Why cant a football game be just a game without people tearing it down into something else?
I dont know..its seems so trivial to me to make an issue of it. But, again...thats just IMO.

The thing about the wrold champions thing confuses me a little. I did not watchb the superbowl as I do not consider it that exciting so I do not know what was said exactly, but from what I can understand it is like Manchester United winning the European cup and saying they are the best in the world when they are only the best in Europe.
If New England consider themselves to be the best in the world they could play all the teams that are in the worldbowl i.e Barcelona Dragons, Scottish Claymores, Frankfurt Glaxay, and a few more whose names I cannot remember. Because to me to be a World champion you have got to play and beat the best in the world, maybe a competition like the FIFA world cup could be started and settle it.
Fuscia I have to agree with you and Mr F here................. for any team that does not compete in a world competition to call themselves world champions is VERY arrogant!!!
and Mystic why do we care...........well because let me give you an example.......if any other country started a football league and won it playing in their own country but started calling themselves world champions, who do you think would be the first ones balking at that???

I was told that they can call themselves that because no other country plays football under the same rules and regulations as we do....
International football (as in other countries) doesnt have the same rules or regulations as our football, and they dont play on the same type of field...so in essence, yes, we can call ourselves that...when other countries start playing American football, then maybe there can be competitions...until then...I dont see the wrong in it.
Of course thats just my opinion....I could be wrong. (Dennis Miller)

"World Champions" has been applied to every SuperBowl victor in the history of the game. It's not new. I agree that it's a silly label when for all they know there could be some Judo team right our of Korea that would kick their butts up and down the field and take the title. Or in the case of this game a bad ref call being reversed might have changed the outcome of the entire game. It's a slim definition to be the World champs I suppose. Hell for that matter they might as well call themselves "Masters of the Universe" cuz who's going to challenge them?
Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to say that the Pats arent the best in the world, they probably are. It just seems silly to have a world championship where only one country is eligible to participate. And we wonder why the rest of the world thinks we are egocentric.
ps Im stunned so many people agree with me, I thought I would get torn a new one
