i'd love to hear "i'll be" if it's done right. Josh, the marine from last year, did it justice. so far i haven't seen any of the guys that could pull it off in the style that i like it. with that slight southern twang.
id like to see past some past idol stars come back and sing old hits. have kelly sing some whitney houston songs, ruben do some old school motown, and justin gaurini and RJ Helton sing a duet togethor (maybe on RJ's new cd?)
Wouldn't it be great when they get down to the top 5 or so, to have them sing the same songs? Have the guys sing one song, the girls another as part of the night.
Add to my list
"My All" by Mariah Carey I love that song
Right now I'm having a hard time picking specific songs, and I have a tendency to lean towards oldies, so I'll shut up about that for now.
Importantly, I would like to hear THEIR interpretation of the songs they choose and not them copying the original artists' delivery.
I also still agree about them all singing the same songs at least with the final 2 or 3. It would be a great way to sort it out, and a very interesting challenge if their styles vary significantly.
I'm going to take a stab here and say if Paul McCartney is a guest judge there will be Beatle's songs. Even, if he can't make it as a judge, I'm predicting a Beatle's "Tribute" at some point.

I LOVE the beatles...but to be perfectly honest...I dont think anyone could sing those songs the way they want them to...at least not at the pop standard they are looking for...there are a few, I admit, that could be, but I dont know...
Maybe McCartney and Wings songs would be better choices for them to sing...does that make sense?
Oh...but I agree Id like to hear more of their own interpretation of the songs chosen.
Of course thats just my opinion....I could be wrong. (Dennis Miller)

Nothing wrong with oldies. I love them. I just want to see someone take an oldie and make it their own, like Clay did with Bridge Over Troubled Water. OMG he was so awesome. I wish I had bought the single.

I'd really like to see that format for at least one of the final nights. Maybe when they're down to five or six left, as you said. I'd also like to see more than one theme night.

I'm a fan of the Beatles. Definitely I would say yes to a 'tribute'. If Paul were to be a judge, a lot of people would attempt their 'Yesterday's, 'Hey Jude's and 'Imagine's.
I'd love to see someone sing 'Here, There and Everywhere'. It's not an easy song, one can definitely tell if a contestant is a good singer or not with this song.

There are sooooooo many songs that the Beatles either performed -- many they wrote, (especially John and Paul), and others that were written for them.
Monday was the 40th Anniversary of the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan show ( yikes ! ) and there are Beatles Tributes everwhere.
okmkenny ... Welcome to INReview. You mentioned "Here, There ..." and I agree that's would be a great song choice. ( BTW, I would also love to hear Clay sing that one.)

Oh, I forgot to mention some songs. Well, I'd like to hear them sing songs that are among my own favorites, songs that are easily recognizable by the audience but are not heard a lot, and songs that allow them to show their talent and range.
For the guys, I'd have them sing songs from Simon & Garfunkle. For the gals, songs from The Carpenters.
Specific examples? Hmmm. How about "An American Dream" for the guys and "The Rainbow Connection" for the gals?
"The Rainbow Connection", written by Paul Williams, is a pretty unique choice because American audiences mostly associate it with Judy Collins and very few (or none) of the female contestants would be able to sing it in her key. Karen Carpenter DID record it but it never got onto one of their hit albums. It has been released on CD in Japan but not here. Karen's voice is at the other end of the range from Judy's. The contestants would have plenty of room to create their own version somewhere in between.
"American Dream" was written by Paul Simon, of course, but was never one of their big hits. The song has been used in a couple of movies, including his own One Trick Pony and even a Ken Burns documentary (about the Statue of Liberty) but it never got widespread airplay. It would be a good test of their vocal range and talent.
