The types of phone calls & tips you're talking about are based on one of two things:
1) Insider trading - can lead to trouble
2) Sucker born every minute principle.
On piont number two, you have to understand that there is NOBODY in the world who gives a rat turd about helping you get rich. They want to help THEMSELVES get rich. You let them talk you out of your money, no matter what kinda of pretty picture they paint around it, you validate the notion that there is indeed a sucker born every minute.
"Playing" the stock market takes actual WORK to be good at it. This is the case with ANY means of making money. There is no such thing as "get rich quick" - again, nobody wans you to get rich, they want themselves to get rich. No matter how many signs they show for channelling money your direciton, there are ten times as many signs channelling your money to them. If you want to make money in the stock market, or in real estate, or in "placing tiny classified ads in newspapers to make thousands and thousands of dollars", you're going to need to do some work.
Once you've gotten into the mindset of "okay, I'm prepared to do some research, leg work and perhaps some investment into my future" - take your pick of industries to apply it to because there is money in EVERY industry imaginable - that's why those industries exist.
Watch your back because nobody else is.
