I was thinking about the character of Seraph, of who he actually is. I've read the script to Enter the Matrix, the videogame, and the script to Matrix Revolutions. (courtesy of StoneKotr from Gamefaqs and Brian Demilio from http://www.briandemilio.com/revolutionsscript.html )
My theory is that Seraph had worked for Merovingian at one time. My first reason is because of a conversation held between Seraph and the Oracle in Enter the Matrix.
quote:
Oracle : Thank you for coming so quickly.
quote:
Seraph : You have no need to thank me. I am forever indebted to you.
quote:
Oracle : It is now I who needs your help.
My second reason is because of how Merovingian addressed Seraph upon him entering the club in Revolutions.
quote:
The prodigal child returns. [in French: The angel without wings]. Are you here for the bounty, Seraph? Tell me: how man bullets are there in those guns? I don't know but I don't think you have enough.
quote:
in French: What a fine surprise, isn't it?]. Who could have guessed we'd all be seeing each other so soon after our last meeting. A fate too kind. And since you, my little Judas, have brought them here, I can only surmise that the fortuneteller has found herself another shell.
Firstly, Merovingian calling Seraph a Judas (basically another word for traitor) struck me as odd. Then he refers to him as the 'angel without wings'. It takes me back to the angels who were cast out of heaven because they rebelled against god, thereby becoming fallen angels. Seraph could have been an obsolete program and sought exile. Maybe his initial purpose was to protect...something; I don't know. He goes to Merovingian (a satanic type character) and becomes his henchman perhaps. Seraph later on feels unsettled with the likes of Merovingian or the Oracle contacts him and gives him a greater purpose. In that way, he feels indebted to her. That's just my theory.
in Reloaded, Neo asks him "Are you a programmer?" and seraph nods that he isnt, however Neo asks "Then what are you?" and Seraph says "I protect that, which matters most." so my first guess was that he was a protector of the Oracle, then in Revolutions he starts to protect Neo, obviously Neo is more important because SPOILER!~!~!~! The Oracle gets cloned by Smith while Seraph is protecting Neo. So maybe he's the protector of what matters most, Neo.... thats my theory
