I think it does make you dumb, just look at the B2K forum. I am always peeved when I see people writing poorly because I think it translate to the way they speak and ultimately the way they write in school.

But I don't use shorthand. Whenever I use IM programs, I always write complete sentences with the best punctuation to my knowledge. I in fact usually hate the short hand people use and I've never adopted it. Hey, I write IM's like I write posts on online forums. Treat everything like an essay, check my spelling, my grammar, my punctuation, and then you'll only get better at your writing.

Very interesting. I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in my dislike of this new "language." I think it does make some people seem dumb and unwilling to learn. When I see people using internet lingo and shorthand, I think two things: Dumb and lazy.

Children are growing up and "socializing" on the internet and using IM programs with their friends. If that's all they know and it is continually accepted and encouraged to be viewed as a "cool" thing, I don't have much hope that the art that is the English language will still be alive in the future.

I never would have guessed a few years ago that the inventor of, as the article calls it, "internetism," would become the Shakespeare of our time.

Texting kind of makes sense to write shorthand, cos if you take up too much space it can cost you. But shorthand in im conversations is annoying and pointless! I always write perfectly normally, like I'm doing now. It's easier!

I note that the people in the B2k threads write very well when the mods get so fed up with the language they use to correspond with one another.

I think it's okay to use shortened expressions on a medium that charges for every word you send.

Ergo: If you want to get a responsible postion after graduating from learning institutions...it would be wise to write legibly.

Aight, I will weigh in, though my heart is not in it...

I hate going in a thread where EVERYONE is on the same page but me,

but I don't see the big deal.

The English Language is a living breathing thing. If people want to talk Southren and say "Y'all",

or talk B2k jive, and say "Wassup?"

it don't bother me, I find it neato. If we all taked the same and used the spell check,

I'm not saying it would be boring, but it wouldn't be as interesting.

Instant messaging lingo, I don't see it much, but what's it hurt?

All the people who use it, have a shot at 12 years of state funded education, they can talk and write half-way decent if they want, they are just having fun,

messing around, shootin the bull.

People are communicating, talking, getting to know each other, it's friendship in action.

No, I believe everyone should write and speak like a good midwesterner. Every newscaster all over the US speaks like a midwesterner. Otherwise, people get confused. Even Peter Jennings, from the fair nation of Canada, had to adjust his talk to sound like a midwesterner.

All other slang, basterdlanguaging should be abolished.

I agree with Whidden. I do not think that typing in shorthand is necesarily a bad thing. It saves time and who wants to write an essay for text messages or on instant messenger. I agree with the fact that people (mainly children who are now growing up with this lingo) should not speak in abbreviations. It is ok on the computer but speaking face to face with people you should react, have emotions. I mean instead of laughing we dont want kids to start saying LOL in place of laughter. A line needs to be drawn but for the computer i see no problem.

I only use IM-style slang when SMS-ing and even then very rarely. Maybe u instead of you and a few shorthand things like that, but not much. It's to hard to read properly.

I try and type properly online and in emails and what-not, but often when I am in a rush there's some major typing errors anyway, so it's not always 100% readable.

I don't think IM makes you dum ......

I think it's just another step in our evolution.

The old and still in use Citizen"s Band Radios uses numbers to communicate with each other.

A CB radio is your best friend when you are traveling on Interstates. The truckdrivers are always chatting and warn each other about "Bears" and locations. They are great when you need directions. But you better know the lingo.

IM language serves to save time and money for the users.

Nothing dumb about that.
