David Beckham to play for L.A. Galaxy post #1  quote:

David Beckham to play for L.A. Galaxy

LONDON - David Beckham agreed to a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer, leaving the Real Madrid club at which he enjoyed worldwide popularity but experienced disappointment on the field.

Beckham, the former English captain who also starred for Manchester United, will join the Galaxy after his contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30. Los Angeles opens its season April 8 in Houston.

"I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own," he said in a statement released Thursday.

The move was announced following the end of talks on extending the 31-year-old English midfielder's contract with the Spanish club. MLS recently changed its rules on salary caps, clearing the way for Beckham to sign a lucrative deal. British news reports put the Galaxy deal at $250 million.

"This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons," Beckham said in the statement. "After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."

Beckham has soccer academies in London and Los Angeles. His wife Victoria, a former Spice Girl, was recently photographed househunting in Los Angeles.

"David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," said Timothy J. Leiweke, president & CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy. "David is truly the only individual that can build the bridge between soccer in America and the rest of the world."

Beckham joined Real Madrid in 2003 after a hugely successful run with Manchester United, where he won six league titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League title. But Beckham did not win a single major trophy with the Spanish club, and his spell coincided with Madrid's worst slump since the early 1950s.

They have not somuch bought a player but a brand. Madrid paid ?35 million for Beckham and to date he has made them ?20 million in shirt sales alone. It's a big move for the MLS but to be honest Beckhams stock in European football has gone down quickly he has not had a good game for over a year and the fact that he is Beckham and Madrids Galatico policy probably stopped him being transferred a long time ago.
Would still take him for Rangers though.

He's not had a good game for over a year? He hasn't had a good game since he last wore a Man Utd Shirt!!! He was never good enough to even get an England cap let alone be captain for as long as he was.

Beckham has had a very sucessful career as being a dead ball specialist. For free kicks and corners there is no one better but over the corse of a match he is and has been since the 1998 world cup overrated and underperforming. He had one good match for the internatial team against Greece but other than that he never had a good game for England.

He will do well in America because it is not that good of a league however you will quickly find out that Beckham has far more hype than he has ability.

Weather or not this will be good for the league is yet to be seen. I just dont like the direction MLS is going in here. $250 million could buy a whole bunch of great players and raise the standard of play league wide. Beckham is still a great player, dont get me wrong, but he will mostly raise the standard of t-shirt and poster sales .

American sports history maybe. I believe the formula 1 driver Michael Shumacher makes something like $100mil+ .

I am pretty sure Schumacher makes a lot more than Beckham I am sure that Ronaldinho at Barcelona is making close to $100 million annually but he is the best player the world has ever seen. Of course if Beckham can transform the MLS into one of the biggest leagues in the world then it is money well spent but I think that the money he is being offered in wages would be better spent on youth development.

Per year? Is that his salary or is it including endorsements. Because that's a whole different situation.

it seems the contract involves endorsements and other stuff. I hear they are doing a reality show too. Simon Fuller (ex-Spice Girls manager) negotiated the deal

I think part of the reason that the old American Soccer league went under was because they bought loads of old, retiring players who weren't that big of a draw anymore and paid them a lots of money.

The last thing this fledgling American Soccer League need is to become bankrupt by paying loads of money to man who isn't that highly regarded as a footballer anymore.

This is no doubt a calculated risk of trying to raise the American Soccer Leagues profile and hoping that the money Beckham brings in will cover the amount they lose by paying his large wage.

And by the way I do not agree that Ronaldino is the best player the world has ever seen. Most people say Pele is but I would put my vote with George Best, he was the best.

Imenat to say one of the best players ther worlds but I have a funny feeling that 4 -5 years from now when he calls it a day he might be regarded as the best ever because he is getting better every week and most importantly he is still hungry which is funny when you consider that apart from the Euro super cup he has won everything he possibly could.

Well maybe Ronaldinho will be rated in the bracket with Pele, Marradonna, Best and Garrincha but it is a very closely run thing between him and Henry as to who is the best around at the second.

I think most Britishers ((as is the accepted plural for people from Britain)) prefer the flawed genius of George Best who was the best player Britain ever produced but suffered from Alcoholism to the seemingly perfect genius of Pele.

Marradonna was a flawed genius but he was also a cheating genius so people outside of Argentina dont like him that much.

Anyway we probably all can agree that Beckham will never be rated in the same bracket as Pele, Marradonna, Best, Garrincha and all those greats ((just to somewhat keep with the original thread idea)).

His base salary is $10.1 mil per year - the rest is incentives , so it is unlikely this will bankrupt the league.

post #18  quote:

Looks like Beckhams sucking up to the US media has cost him. Fabio Cappelo ( Beckhams boss at R. Madrid) has told him he will never play for Madrid again. It kind of leaves Beckham with 3 options 1. he stays put on the Bench and watch his career go down the toilet ( possibly taking "brand Beckham" with it), 2 he goes out on loan to either Italy or England or 3 LA Galaxy buy out Beckhams contarct and he goes straight away.

I think the LA Galaxy boss ( who I belive is Lalas) should take look at the Beckham situation. He has fallen foul of his boss at Madrid not a big deal but look at Manchester united he had an a spectacular arguement with Alex Ferguson. There were hardly a lot of English clubs falling over themselves to sign Beckham in fact I believe he signed for La because no major European club wanted him. He has a reputation a brand that no meer manager can control, a wife who has seen as to controlling in Beckhams football career. I rember the Chelsea coach being asked a few years back if he would sign David Beckham his reply " I need footballers not movie stars". The question is America esp California going to have an adverse affect on Beckahms career and is Lalas a strong enough coach to reel the pre - Madonna in when he inevitably steps out of line.
