if i were a cynic i should say that chirac was against war in the hope that saddam will stay in power so he can buy another nuclear reactor from his friend chirac.
or he might be against war because of a french company's(elf) oil interests in Iraq

But its surely not true How can a country that has always displayed the highest moral standards act in such a way?
I've never come across any examples of the French acting only in their own interests!
nuclear tests in the south pacific anyone?
blocking common agricultural reform anyone?
etc.etc.etc

If that's the case, he's following the American free market principle and competing for the oil...good for him, I'd rather see them get it than Bush's personal friends!

check this vids, unfortunatley it's in french, but it's a congress in Dallas, you know Oil town ?, discussing about ........ Iraq oil once Saddam will be gone.
Invitee: ex-minister from Saddam government promising that in 2 years, there will be no problem, biggest part of Iraq oil will go to US companies ...... at the end of the vids, one americain is saying: if US companies invest in Iraq oil, I will loose my job ............................
