What do you think of them as? Just some youngens who are putting on black to get some attention? Or people who are just being themselves, and showing who they really are? Do you think of Avril Lavinge a a PUNK or PRETENDER????

There are all kinds. I think many are attention-starved, and so they do something different to gain attention for themselves. However I believe there are other who are more genuinely into certain cultural aspects of goth that may make them more "authentic" In terms of goth chicks - some are downright frightful to behold, I don't buy into it.. especially excessive body-art yuck: desecration, IMO.. not rfom a religious standpoint, I just don't think it's attractive and that many of them might have regrest about permanent "personal" modifications as they grow older. Some, on the otherhand.. are drop-dead gorgeous.

I recall in recent years seeing a gorgeous, pale girl all in black with tight leggings and long, flowing coattails trailing behind her as she crossed a street, her thin legs moved her gracefully and she was just one of those unearthly vissions of "wow".

Oh yeah, and by contrast, Avril is your average *****y highschool flopout drug-addict loser. I don't think wearing too much mascara/eyeliner qualifies her to be a part of conversation about goth..

Punks are the in the same situation as far as I'm concerned. To me, some punk is cool and attractive.. and other is just over the line and repulsive. Matter of preference I suppose..

my personall opinon on all this is that..
Goths (like myself) have there own way of showing who they really are... Avril Lavien.. I think that she has the right way of going and showing who she really is.. all these little pukes who think that they can go and be posers... like ummm... (even tho I like these guys) Blink-182.. there posers..but I still like there music.. I don't but that all I really have to say

I don't think being goth is a way to "show who you really are" anymore. It's unoriginal - more of a trend now. In fact - now adays, being goth is more unoriginal than not.

but do you know every single gothic person on this earth and if they are only doing it to be cool or if they really are showing their true feelings. so you cant exactly say that unless you have proof of it, and if you dont, then all its doing is insulting people who are gothic.

Yea, I don't care for goth, but to each his own I guess. SNL made fun of goth on a few occassions, pretty funny.

There was this guy with some real issues at the light rail station. First he called this goth chick "sweetie pie", she said "don't call me that.". Then he said something about not putting lipstick on ****. Then he said something like "I am what I am and that's who I'm going to be." Reminded me of Popeye. Riding mass transit has it's more memorable moments at times

They can wear trash bags for all I care. As long as they act respectfully. By this I mean, as long as they aren't standing around yelling and swearing and generally making a**es of themselves like the majority of the populations seems to be doing these days. Could it be because I also ride public transportion that I feel this way? Yeah, I think so.

So pierce your ears 203 times, wear as much white makeup as you want. Just don't sit next to me on the bus and tell me how many beers you just had and how many people you had sex with yesterday. That's not so much to ask.

baby biatch, I am a sk8boarding punk, I wear baggy pants and chains and ties, chokers, studded wrist cuffs etc, and I can honestly tell you that it's not for attention, we dress like it to express ourselves, just like ya'll wear your skirts and tight tops and dresses... It's just the style that we like...

When a gothic mom gives birth..Does she end up "Shreaded wheat"? Do they avoid water so they will not rust? When your gothic..do you still need Iron in your diet? much to ponder..

I'd say that your "valid questions" are infact, quite offensive to goths, You are insinuating that goths are some kind of dark creature, like dracula or something. they don't come out only at night are not full of some magnetic field that attracts them to lightning or sharp objects. They are just people, like you and me, sure they have problems, but don't the rest of us?

i dont have anything against goths at all because truly appearence has nothing to do with the person inside. i have so many friends that dress totally different. to me it makes no difference.

If you three "children" would have payed more attention in school Expecially in "Reading"class...It would be just too easy to see these were Real questions pertaining to Science and health and one for curiousity. You want the world to acknowledge "Goth" and understand it. Yet If a question is raised, Boo hoo Boo hoo they're Knocking "Goth" again!

sometimes goths can be sad or angry people yes, but most of the time it's just their fashion... If we ask these "legit" questions about goths, then we should ask, "why do preppys dress like they do"? "why do hip hoppers wear loads of jewellery? to make them look rich when they are infact poor"? "why do homeless people wear rags?" these are pathetic questions just like bitwiz's questions... It's all about the inner self... so just get over it,,, goths are normal people, and about them grunting and not having an education... thats bullsh*t! marylin manson is a huge successful goth and he is very educated, he likes art and was well appreciated in high school... so bitwiz please shut up!

yeah its very common. when people feel sad or depressed they turn into who they are now. i knew this girl who was an insomniac and she was a guinea pig and they tested all sorts of sleeping drugs on her and she would be gone from school for a few days. i felt bad for her.

Glad I could shed some light on the subject for you...so to speak I see it like this, everyone is born innocent. Everyone becomes who they are going to be for the rest of their lives through the way that others treat them. If you are treated badly enough times, you will eventually have a bad attitude and out look on life and everyone/thing in it. No one is "born" goth. They are created. As for posers, posers are just people who like that way of life and that style of dress. They are just pretending to be something that they aren't. Because posers haven't had to actually go through rejection, or extreme cruelty from others, they don't really understand those who have. People seem to fear and not like what they don't understand. And most people don't even make an effort to try to understand others and why they are the way that they are.

Pulse, have you read the book The Catcher in The Rye if you have not its about this kid (Holden) who is scared to grow up and he wants to be the catcher in the rye to catch the other small innocent kids from falling off this cliff into adult hood. He says once you grow old you become different and become a thief or a crook. This kind of ties into what you were saying.

a lot of people are dealt sh**ty hands. no one person holds a monopoly on a rough life. its what you do with it that proves your character and your mettle. don't blame society for making certain choices easier to make than others.

One of my best friends is gothic and i dont appreciate how they are treated. At my school the administration "dress codes" goths about the smallest things. Just last month they banned jelly bracelets from the campus. But this is what i dont get. How can the goths get dress coded when these preps are showing more skin than a nude bar.I am not gothic but i think it is bullcrap that everyone discriminates against goths. I think that everyone is allowed to wear whatever they want and get away with it. If its one group that needs to change its the preps.This is a free country and we are allowed to express our opinion and ideas

I don't wear black all the time. Mostly because I don't have enough of it to actually be able to wear it everyday. I don't dress to get attention either. I really don't give a **** what people think about me or about how I choose to dress. I will admit though, if I'm going out with someone and I really like this person then, yeah, I tend to try to "impress" them. But not everyone else. I'll hang up the black for a night and go out looking at least half way "normal". I want the person that I'm with to think that I look good. I want to get their attention, not everyone else's. I care about the feelings of the person that I'm with. If I'm not with anyone, then, I don't give a ****. If my wearing a considerable amount of black all the time bothers them, then I'll 'tone it down' a bit. But as far as I know, it's never bothered anyone that I've went out with. Basically, I don't do things to get attention. The less attention that I attract to myself, the better. And honestly, I must be doing a pretty good job at it because most people pretend that I'm invisible and don't pay me any attention. Either that or their afraid of me

I've got news for you: MOST-to=all who call themselves "goth" or "punk" or "gangsta" or whatever the hell do so for attention, period. I've never met a 50 year old gangsta, nor a 40 year old goth, nor a 30 year old punk. These things are youthful fads/phases that diminish with time & maturity. This, by definition then, is a young grasp for attention as you seek to discover yourself. Deny it all you want, you only deny yourself, which is no skin off my back.

(Oh and I love how those not like you can be easily labelled "preppies" as a distinctly identifiable group of people - how misguided you've been! )

It's not about sensorship, it's just about maintaining a respectable atmosphere. There is a wide range of contentious topics on this site, and all of them have been carried on in a respectable manner - this topic should be no different.

I get alot of people saying that i'm a goth, because i wear alot of black. Nearly my whole wardrobe is black! The reason for that is that it suits me. I have nothing against goths, and I don't understand why for some people it is a problem that others feel like expressing themselves in that way. What gets me is when peole over react about goths...they are ordinary people...sure they might dress a little differently, but so does everyone! It's the way they want to dress...accept it!

I like the color. Bright colors literally hurt the back of my eyes. I can't stand to look at them. I get headaches really easily too. Black...what an absolutely wonderful color
