It's a nice thought....

| Posted by: ickle | | No, they hate America.
I was travelling extensively through third world nations before Bush was even running for office. I heard and overheard lots of nasty things said about America in general and Bill Clinton.
Anti-Americanism did not spring up when GWB became president.
Many in the 3rd world feel as though they are pawns in a game played by the superpowers. As the leading superpower, we get most of the blame.
Here's an example: I had dinner one night with two natives when I was in Nepal. At great length, they described to me how Saddam was their hero. Why? Because he stood up to the UN and the US and survived. I brought up numerous examples of what a bad guy he was including details of what he'd done to the Kuwaiti's and the torture he inflicted upon his own people. The kind of acknowledged that these things were bad but still viewed him a hero.
BTW: Both of these guys also depserately wanted to come the the US.
People who live in 3rd world nations are the pawns in our larger game and I can't say that I don't understand their perspective. Just look at what went on in the UN, France lobbying her allies, the US lobbying ours. (Wait, did I just imply that France was a superpower? - Never mind.) | | Reply To this Message

Absolutely, ickle! I'm an immigrant to the U.S. When I visit my home country I overhear conversations that are nearly universally and unquestionably anti-American. They hate us—always have, always will. The greatest and richest nation on earth will always be hated. It's as simple as that. Jealousy and petty hatred needs no further explanation.

| Posted by: gaboman | | True, there was lots of Anti American things previously.
But I did like Clinton. He was the man.
I do have one more comment, do you really think "divorcing" the rest of the World is a smart idea? Do you really think America is fully self-sufficient? You can keep your oil I'll get a push-bike.
Think about the computer that you are using right this moment and where the parts from it were maybe designed, manufactured, and distributed. I can tell you it probably wasn't America (perhaps the operating system was! Can't do much with that without a processor, motherboard, memory, keyboard, mouse, etc)
Just something to think about before commenting how wonderfully independant you can be without the "rest of the world" | | Reply To this Message

I said we could divorce the rest of the world but still be friends. We'd stay out of politics but still trade. We'd stop providing aid, stop paying for the UN and NATO, stop rushing to the aid of earthquake and flood victims, stop protecting South Korea from North Korea, let China take over Taiwan (I'll bet you'd love that), and generally just not give a hoot about world politics or what goes on in other nations.
Of course we'd still want to trade, for oil if nothing else. Although, given our ability to develop technology, we could probably be energy self-sufficient if we really had to. With respect to computers, we could easily make our own. And gvien the amount of aid we dole out, though a computer might cost a bit more, the net money we'd save by not feeding, clothing and protecting half of the planet would probably result in an overall higher standard of living for our citizens.

| Posted by: gaboman | | Ickle, I don't give a damn about Taiwan, I just live here. China takes over, I'm out of here. However, you can't expect trade from Taiwan, atleast if America does allow China to invade. You see, America gets a great deal from this Country, as many important products are manufactured here - I'm sure you've noticed. Do you really expect that to continue if those political ties which are important to this, or any other Country, are severed?
America is not the only Country who provide aid to others, though your self-importance obscures this fact. Many nations come to the aid of struggling or disaster ridden countries. So get off your high horse.
Also, America's ability to develop technology is not so great compared to many other Countries around the World. Computers are mainly developed overseas, not because they're necessarily cheaper (though production costs are much cheaper), but because of the developments that has been made in foreign Countries. We're not just talking computers: medical equipment of all sorts, medicines, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, cars, telephones, certain foods even. Do you really want to settle for second rate products just because of national "pride."
This is the main part of the argument though: "...generally just not give a hoot about world politics or what goes on in other nations."
If you don't want to give a hoot, why support the war in Iraq? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: ickle | | Look, I started this thread to inject a little humor into the anti-American bias thing, not get into an endless debate about what America's value to the world is.
I do not and would never seriously propose either political or economic isolation for the US - that's just plain stupid, not to mention unrealistic. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: USA1 | | gaboman,
So you run in the face of advercity. Don't come here, you won't get along.
So now it's America that has to save Taiwan? Explain just how America can stop China from doing anything?
First you call us stupid and than want us to save the country you only live in?
Let's see, IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, GM, Ford, Boeing, Motorola, should I keep going? I can't forget to mention our military technology that might have to be used to save the country you are using as a residence.
Do you stand up for anything, or just yourself? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: gaboman | | Thankyou Ickle, finally making some sense. Though I do believe INVAR was the one who suggested a divorce.
In the face of advercity... ooooh... advercity! *shaking with fear*
It is true, China doesn't move on Taiwan because it's scared of retaliation from the other countries (not only the US), which is why they haven't moved thus far. I never denied that, and I never said the rest of the World would wish to seperate itself from the US as I never said I wish America would save Taiwan, please stop making things up.
Military technology, it always goes back to that as far as you are you are concerned... but Countries like mine are not in any threat from the US what-so-ever (as I mentioned I am not Taiwanese, just to ensure you keep up with me... you're a bit slow i noticed), and rather receive a fair bit of backlash from middle eastern people within the country pissed because America is invading Iraq and blame .
Yes, I'd like you to keep going. I never doubted America had some technology, but those technologies wouldn't be worth Sh!t without the components within, which are... TADA! Developed in foreign countries. Keep up the good research though.
PS, I didn't call you stupid, but since you're offended I believe you are. I said we don't hate americans, we hate stupidity. This does of course mean if you are American, you may very well not be stupid, which I believe many people aren't. You took a mighty amount of offence from that sir, which puts you in the small percentage I was talking about.
As ickle said, it was meant to infuse a little humor. But you sir, are an a$$ who cannot losen up and seems to not be able to understand english too well by the multiple misrepresentations of my comments, which were made quite clearly.
To ickle, I appologise, and I do want to say I have a large amount of respect for you and your opinion. I'm sorry if I lead you to believe otherwise here. | | Reply To this Message

Not only most of today's technology was invented in the USA or Europe, world's most known scientists were either european or american (and russian, i must say), but all of what is being sold in america right now can be produced from beginning to the end in the USA. Starting with design, and ending with retail distribution. Most of the parts are being made outside US in asian countries - because it's cheaper. It shows how US supports developing countries and maintains more or less viable international market when coming down to routing production.
I bet you think that stupid americans wouldnt be able to produce computer parts, unlike genius chinese or taiwanese. | | Reply To this Message

Ofcourse certain part of electronics are developed, engineered and produced in other countries, but for example computer processors are made only in the USA. Guess why? Because other countries can NOT handle their production. I dont even mention the technology. There are only couple of other countries technologically advanced like USA - Japan, Germany and maybe Russia. Nobody else! | | Reply To this Message
