Why would Dumbledore appoint Draco Malfoy as a prefect? His behaviour around the school has always seemed anything but trustworthy.

because he represents perfectly our house

Lets see, he could have made Crabbe or Goyle a prefect? NO WAY! I think he was just the best student of all the Slytherins and had leadership qualities.

Not appointing him a prefect would have annoyed his father, and I don't think Dumbledore wanted additional trouble from Lucius Malfoy at the time.

Good call Agent Mike! I never thought of that, but I think you are right. Dumbledor was facing pressure from the Ministry.

That may also be part of the reason he didn't appoint Harry a prefect; the ministry might have thought it was a controversial decision.

he told harry y he didnt make him a perfect coz he already had enough to deal with!

Maybe he was being polite.

Harry: Sirius died.
Dumbledore: I know. I didn't make you a prefect because everyone hates you.

That would have been a bit inappropriate.

i dunno dumbledore was telling harry everything about everything so y woukld he be polite about not making him a perfect. he would have just told him instead of keeping another secret that he prolly would have had to tell him b4 he left school anyway! know wht i meen?

personally, i think it was a good choice to make Ron prefect instead of Harry - Ron has some wonderful qualities and he really needed that boost (being second best to Harry all the time) ..

then .. Harry has almost always been the one to make the other two break school laws .. of course he had his reasons - it still makes that a pretty difficult premise to become a prefect - i guess Dumbledore hoped that Ron and Hermione would keep Harry from doing "stupid" things ..

Harry had way too much stuff on his plate this last school year - and Dumbledore knew it .. and considering the fact that he really was a brat in the fifth book (and Ron wasn't at all), he would have been an awful prefect (in my opinion) ..

as to Draco .. yeah, Lucius probably had a finger in that pie .. and also .. who else? are there any Slytherin boys in that school year besides Draco, Grabbe and Goyle?

I'm sure that there are other boys in that year with Draco, Crabbe and Goyle. I don't think that they want to focus on them though. Just a few different characters from the other houses, to give us a blend of people, with the focus staying on the Gryffindor house.

I think that Draco was a prefect because of his father. I bet that had ANY other person been put in that position in the Slytherin house, and Lucius would have gone bazerk.

As for Harry not being a prefect, I'm glad that he wasn't made one. I don't want Harry to have every single piece of the spotlight. Ron was a great choice in my humble opinion.

About Draco, just like Nion says, he became a prefect because he represents Slytherin house perfectly, and that's all. I mean, Ron made trouble too, and broke rules, and got into fights, and still Dumbledore made him prefect. I think this prefect thing is mostly about who is the best leader, and Malfoy is a great choice for that since all the Slytherins practically worship him.
And I guess Ron became prefect because Dumbledore thought about Harry's relationship with his friends. I think it would be too much for Ron if Harry got the prefect's badge too - remember how he reacted when Harry's name was in the Goblet of fire in book4? He was so jealous.
And another thing... who will become Headboy and Head girl in year 7? I think it will be Hermione and Malfoy. Don't know why... i just have a feeling Dumbledore might pick them. Other ideas?

Maja, good pick for Head Boy and Girl. That would be an interesting mix. Hermione and Draco having to work together. Wow! I also don't think Ron could have dealt with Harry being a Prefect. I think Dumbledor knew that Harry would need his friends support, and that Harry has too grave of a responsibility already.

Yeah Hermione and Malfoy are like the two *poles* of Hogwarts, she as a representative of Gryffindor and he as an embody of Slytherin power.
And it also reflects the whole 7th year thing - the ultimate fight between Harry and Voldemort that will probably happen in the 7th book, and therefore even stronger tension between Gryffindor and Slytherin throughout the whole year.

By the way i had this crazy thought one day about... yeah it's wacked... but it just appeared in my mind... **Hermione and Malfoy in a passionate kiss**. Yeah, i'm going crazy. I guess it's because of the No.23788 Movie Rule: The more a woman and a man hate each other, the biggest chance they'll become romantically involved. But i guess it DOES only work for the movies... not books too... ummm... right?

I don't think you are crazy. I also think that there is sexual tension between those two. I think it makes Draco furious also.

Ohh... fuscia you're a life saver. That's exactly what i was thinking. Only it wasn't easy to bring it up. :-)

Yes, I am sure we will irritate more than a few people with our opinion on this.

Nah... I'm sure that there is some tension there between those two, and they don't understand why at this point. But, it could become really apparent if Hermione and Ron don't become a couple. Though, I can't say that I could see Draco dating a "mudblood." His father would kill him...

Yeah well that's the point, it would really make things more interesting...i'd love to see everyone's reaction to them as a couple.

Kris, remember what it was like to be a teen? Time to assert your independence. He just might go for it for many reasons: get daddy's attention- full attention, or to give dear old dad a stroke. I think Draco will become his own man by the end of the series.

I agree with you... I'm just stating that at this point, the way that he feels about mudbloods, I can't see it. But, becoming a young adult is all about growing and making your own decisions.

It will be interesting to see where JKR takes the romance for Hermione. There is so much already there between her and Ron, but never say never in this world of HP!!!!

It would be time for Draco to start behaving a bit rebelious towards his father... he's been such a p*ssy with him till now and it would be a surprse to see him changed. Only i hope Tom Felton will be able to cope with that character alteration... i wouldn't bet on it...hm hm**

Yeah, it's quite true: Draco needs to grow up. Though the tension between he and Harry is just growing stronger, I do feel that Draco will, eventually, be the epitome of every bully that you ever met who ended up being nice, simple person.

Though he could also end up being a death eater and having a final showdown with Harry (or Ron ).

I think one thing a prefect should have is an ability to "bend the rules" as all of the prefects we were shown in the book seemed to have done at one time or another. I think none of them really broke the rules with evil intentions (including Malfoy), so it does actually give them an edge in being prefects.

There is definately tension (wont call it sexual... yet) between Draco and Hermione... I'm not entirely sure what will become of this, it may just stay as tension and eventually go kaboom! or it may turn out to be something between them. The way he picks on her, even though it seems serious, I think there will be something there. (I just can't see it happening with Ron)

gaboman, I like the way you think. It is wonderful to have someone new join our discussions!

Percy was the only Prefect not to break rules. I think Dumbledore had a shallow pool to pick from in the Slytherin house when he chose their prefect.

I wish that J.K. Rowling would keep the series going. I would love to see Harry have peace for a while, then have Draco emerge as the new Dark Force. Draco could go either way. I just think if dear old daddy keeps pushing him, he is going to blow up and assert himself in a huge way.

i'll kind've be disappointed if the series keeps going... I love the books and the story, but unfortunately I think the story will get somewhat watered down.

but it'll be great to hear about more events in the wizarding world, if she could write a book around this world, and include newer characters, villains and so on (a la Tolken) it may be interesting.

Draco being a new dark force MAY be a good idea. To be honest, Harry isn't really much of a match for he who must not be named... but Draco definately is. Maybe Harry can just stab Voldemort (shivers) and duel Malfoy If the prophecy in OoTP is true, Harry doesn't stand a chance

Oh thanks for the kind words I'll be staying around, if it's all the same to everyone here....

I don't think that Draco is a more powerful wizard than Harry. I do believe that Harry will defeat Vodie, but may also do a Frodo and go through the veil.

I would like to see her write about the adventures of Dumbledore. He is 150 or so years old, he must have some great stories. Also, the founding of Hogwarts. There is some very rich material there.

Narcissa Malfoy, will we hear more about her, and what is her influence on her son?

Dumbledore! I'm with you on that! He really is the most powerful wizard, and is always awesome to read about.

Or maybe a HP prequel? ooooh that'd be good.

No Draco isn't as powerful as Harry, but I do think he'll show himself as being somewhere near Harry's level. But perhaps a final battle with Draco isn't what's going to happen.
