We find out near the end of book 5 that Sturgis was unfairly imprisoned due to corrupt ministry members. Yet, we're not told what happens to him in the end. We know that the dementors leave Azkaban, but is that enough to assume that he is a free man?

I don't know if we should ever assume ANYTHING in the world of HP. I've come to be shocked with JKR too many times, thinking that I knew what would happen, etc... just to find out that it was something that I never thought of in the first place.

Since the dementors aren't at Azkaban, is there anyone else guarding the prisioners there? Was that even mentioned?

I agree that it's unwise to ever anticipate what Rowling's next move will be. However, she does leave alot of loose ends in this installment which I think would be better tied up now. The ending of this book also feels very rushed. Like you said, she was very vague on the subject of the dementors. I think that if she was not under so much pressure to release the book (3 years is a long time) she would have written more. She therefore may even have been more specific concerning certain details. I'm all for a cliffhanger, but the book would do better to solve some of its own mysteries, otherwise we'll always be focusing on what is to come, and not what we're reading.

I'm not so sure... I think that she's going to get into more detail in the next two books. Yes, she could have explained a lot... but then, how long would it have been? It's already too long to ever make a movie out of it. And I think that is something that she's feeling pressure on as well.

Good point about the movie pressure. But I hope she never allows her material to suffer because she has the films in mind. True, she makes truck loads of money from them, but a real artist would not let that distract her from what she really wants to convey. It would be sad to see the saga collapse under its own commercialism like that.

Oh man, that would really be a shame if she allowed the pressure, or the money, to change the books. I would hate to see that. I love the HP books because 1) they are original, 2) they have such wonderful characters, and 3) her writing style is really good. It pulls you in.

I think Sturgis Podmore will reappear in book 6 and according to someone in this forum, the 6th book is supposed to take place in azkaban. If it does than I'm dead sure that J.K. will mention Sturgis

Cool info. sirius, perhaps that shines some light on the locations debate for the next two books.

But wasn't Sturgis sentenced to only 6 months in Azkaban? Shouldn't he finish it before book 6 plot begins?

About the non-Dementor guards in Azkaban... well, I don't think that anyone would like to work with Dementors. But maybe Fudge at least put some Aurors or other Ministry officials to guard the prison when he saw Dementors are beginning to disobey. And if he didn't... well, that would explain a lot about the escaped Death Eaters. On the other hand there's surely really strong magic put on the whole place...
Actually, where is Azkaban? Did JK Rowling even wrote some hints? I can't remember any...

Azkaban is set out in the middle of the Ocean. I believe it is South of England as Sirius only wanted to view Harry at Privet Drive before he headed North.

Please keep in mind that book 5 was a set up to book 6 and book 7. JK said that she had to cram things in five so that we would not be blindsided in the last two books. Sturgis will show up. I think he will hear talk among the DE and report back to the order when he gets out.
