Let's remember first Matrix. A movie that raised the idea that people live in matrix, and are under control of computers that won the war against humans. Story line was rich, effects were new and impressing, and the whole movie seemed to be something new, different from most of other thrillers. What did we get in the continuation, Matrix: Reloaded? Even better effects, more fights and mass destruction... but where is the story line? What was the purpose of Zion? Why is it's population 100% black (no racial offence)?
Next one - Terminator 3: Rise of the machines. The movie itself repeats Terminator 2 from beginning to the end, except for Connor being 10 years older and looking like a drug addict, TX being a chick with big boobs, ... that's all? Where is the rise of the machines and $170 million that was spent on effects? How is it possible that a nuclear reactor is fit in a box as small as a cigarette pack, and nuclear explosion did absolutely NO damage to neither terminator nor Connor/his wife? Though TX was being describe as much more powerfull robot than Arnie, he killed it somehow... 'Restart' was pretty funny too...
Another new movie is 2Fast and 2Furoius. The fact that this movie is made for teens and young adults who like street racing... doesnt judge it's stupidity. Mafia boss made 8 guys go and get an envelope that contained... a cigar. Going 120mph on a highway, our super-hero-driver pulls handbrake and turns exactly by 180 degrees. How is that possible? What's even funnier, he keeps going reverse with the same speed (!!!).
The Hulk. I know it's for kids and i shouldnt look to deep into it... but why make it so aggressive then? If it's not for kids and target viewer is an adult... Why so stupid? Same feeling of being treated like an idiot was inside me while i was watchin all of these movies.
Then again, you must consider why movies are made... to make money. Period. This world thrives on advertisement and pleasing the viewers' eyes with special effects and sex in exchange for their money. Movies may seem like sh*t when it comes to storylines, but at least someone benefits from it. And by that somone, I mean the movie producers and companies.
MrJukoVette, please elaborate how you think that The Matrix Reloaded had no story, because after all, we've used up hundreds of threads here discussing that story, not the special effects. Of course, this would imply that there is a great deal of a story, and a great deal to talk about - as a matter of fact, I challenge you to find any movie with a deeper, more thoughtful, and more multilayered story than either The Matrix or The Matrix Reloaded
(However, I do of course agree that in general, most movies are shallow and thoughtless, though that applies not just to modern movies, but older ones as well.)

True. Issue here is that there would not be offer without demand, and people keep watching movies only for their special effects... Where will we end up?

The Matrix - yes, Reloaded - no. They just used the popularity of the first part to push second one thru, and didnt bring anything new - plain fights, crashes, shooting scenes and so on. Didnt forget sex as well.

Modern movies are in average worse than older ones. Farther it goes, dumber the idea and the story line, and more and more computer effects and impressive scenes.

i disagree. if all movies looked like North by Northwest i sure wouldn't spend my money on them. i don't think its a matter of being better or worse. they're just different. some modern movies are good, and some are bad. some older movies are good, and some are bad. that's the way it's always been and that's the way it always will be. some people like intellectual stories, some like sensory overload, some like both and some people just read books. its all personal preference.

...further to what Unreal said... Reloaded is the 2nd of 3 movies... the story in Reloaded is very different to that in The Matrix - in The Matrix a guy who calls himself Neo finds out he's right: he exists in a world within a world, and actually, he can help break the bars of this prision. He has abilities beyond his wildest dreams. In Reloaded, the prision he thought he knew is turned upside-down... he knows about the real world now, but, suddenly he doesn't know what to believe again. He's being told things - he realises the level of control inherent - all the blacks and whites, facts/fictions, are swirling together into an opaque grey-ish colour where now he has to deal with Oracles who are programs, information traffickers, and The Architect, a man who takes great pleasure in telling him that he will not save Zion, but actually be the trigger in its destruction.
I just wanted to illustrate that Reloaded isn't a re-heated Matrix.
I haven't seen Rise of The Machines T3 yet - but I did see Charlie's Angels II and was a little unimpressed by the extensive use of "bullet time"... !!

what would be the point? your mind is made. if i list a movie i thought was good you'll say one of two things. you'll either agree it was good (or almost good), but then throw in that it was the only (or 1 of a few) somewhat decent movie(s) in recent history. or you'll ask me what i thought made it a good movie and that if thats the best i can do then i've proven your point.
No offense or anything but I view that your perspective on movies does not revolve around the entertainment line itself. I can understand that some movies may not be all that it seems but the fact is, we as viewers only look on to movies for entertainment and not the plot itself. It is a good thing when a movie has kickin' story line, but even the viewer knows better than to watch to judge. My father works on movies and I have helped him many times so I know what the director and the producers are trying to do. I also know that they don't find much care to do some movies with a story line just to keep the entertainee's interested in the effects and the suspense. To say that some of these movies revolved mainly on lines that made no sense at all is like saying you enjoy masturbating with out a porn, and that is pretty damn sad. So before you judge a movie before you get the full idea of how and why it was done that what you should consider is the fact that if it looked good and the scenes rocked then keep your fat trap shut.
MrJuko, I still hold by my original comment, though - how could this board exist, and how could we have so much to talk about (revolving around Reloaded), if there was no story?

I cannot believe that anyone can say that about modern movies or older ones. There have been so many movies that have been made in the past 20 years that are so full of thought and emotion. It doesn't matter whether they are unbelievable or not.....they are meant to help take the viewer to a different place. Some have been thoughtless, but not too many. All in all, movies are made for fun and money. To explore new adventures throughout the human imagination. To help a person feel sad, happy, angry, etc.
as a matter of fact, I challenge you to find any movie with a deeper, more thoughtful, and more multi layered story than either The Matrix or The Matrix Reloaded
I'll take a shot. What about LOTR, that movie/s freakin' awesome. And it gets better with the book. But i think that LOTR might not be more thoughtful, multi layered, deeper then the matrix. but it sits on the same plateau that matrix is at.
snunka, I was afraid someone would answer with LOTR I've always been a huge fan of the books, and now the movies - at the same time, though, despite its incredible scope (languages, a world, etc.), it seems a little bit more straightforward than The Matrix, too, so that's why I made sure I included those three words (deeper, thoughtful, multi-layered) - just so that some smartass wouldn't come back with Lord of the Rings. Nice. hehe

Ok, u might be right there.
But i guess i am comparing LOTR to Matrix in the sense of greatness. I think Matrix rocks, reason why. I think about matrix on my free time, That never happens with too many movies. I love the matrix because of it's captivating story and such. I also on my free time just think about LOTR same way as matrix except for all the questions .
If i had to pick, i would pick the matrix for deeper, thoughtful, multi-layered) content, but i just had to say LOTR because it's a phenomenal trilogy; also the next one will be return of the Jedi good.

Hey what about films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, or LOTR. Surely Matrix and MReloaded arent the end-words in movie-making. For that matter, though I regard the depth of MReloaded, I despise the treatment. Why these boorish fights, why unwanted partyings, why oh why the sex scene?????
it seems there are several types of movies.....all attempting to do what Legend described below including some of them leaving people feeling 'empty'. At times when I am browsing my local Blockbuster and looking over their selection I wonder what possesses someone to make the films they do. After all, some are direct to video, and usually, I have seen some, without any redeeming value (yes not even entertainment by my standard and I like some really bad films too).
personally, I would like to see more content in films, more conceptual ideas put to the test, and more movies pushing and including new technology in film making. This makes me wonder though if the quality of most "big" films are lowering their quality to reach more people with a smaller idea, or are they gradually lowering our intelectual involvement in movies in general? In short, are we being reduced as movie watchers or are the movies themselves being reduced? Either way, with all the movies being made today the percentage of engaging movies is getting slimmer. It is just too easy to pick out a film these days with more entertainment value than intellectual value.
i love a good intellectual film now and then. but there's so much sh*t going on in the world today i don't always want to go to a movie to ponder the intricacies of life, philosophy and higher learning. sometimes i just want to go to a movie and watch cool special effects, high speed car chases and big objects explode. yeah, i know stuff like this happens in real life but i'm a big enough boy to know that in a movie its not real, there are no consequences, and that the good guy always wins. so i just sit there and enjoy it. if that makes me shallow, so be it. i think it just makes me well rounded.
I watch movies for entertainment too. One of the latest i saw was LXG. Now there are 2 Hulk-type monsters instead of 1 beating each other up, even more BS scenes, and even more childish story line. Computer effects are super cheap! The ship and the monsters looked like in 1995 games. Barrels under Venice were simply amazing!
Ofcourse movies are not real. I used to watch all these thrillers with Van Damm and Stallone, that carried no sense but plain fights, destruction, and aggressiveness. I am tired of them! How can you watch that shlt? I would like to see more content in films, more conceptual ideas put to the test,
None of those!
and more movies pushing and including new technology in film making
Enough of that out there. However **** movie doesnt become better with super computer effects and bigger explosions.
Gonna watch Johnny English tonight - hope it will be better...
The fight scenes in the Matrix: Reloaded are not boorish, well to you they are, but obviously you do not appreciate the time, effort and creativity in those scenes. There has never been a fight scene that can be seen so clearly and executed with such precision. The moves in those scenes are completely unimaginable and they really captures the meaning of "martial arts" like nobody has before. But for someone who does not appreciate those kinds of things, of course that person will not enjoy it.

I can appreciate that many sequels are brainless. I'll even admit that the storyline in Reloaded was not as dynamic as the first film. However, there are two things that must be considered.
1. Reloaded is only the first half of the sequel. It's storyline should not be judged until it is completed in Revolutions.
2. What the movie lacks in plot, it certainly makes up for in symbolism, clever religious references and multi-layered philosophy. Proof of these three things is the fact that we're all in a giant forum discussing them.
There is always a target audience for movies which determines how they set up advertising, and all the movies listed in the original thread are basically fast paced action style movies. To say that all movies made nowadays are on the average worse you would have to include more types of movies. Movies like Holes, Finding Nemo, Bruce Almighty etc.. are completely different types of movies that were all decent. Perhaps you are too entrenched in fast pace movies to realize you can enjoy the ones that slow down a little as well. These action packed, mile a minute features get the bulk of the advertisements and attention because they appeal to the younger audiences likely to watch them but they do not make up the whole industry. Some years have better overall movies than others, and it seems like this was a year where we had an overwhelming number of movies with high expectations that seemed to fall short (Hulk, T3, Charlie's Angels, and a few more). It's always more dissapointing to expect something from a movie and have it fall flat than to not have any expectations at all. There were however a number of movies this year that were not only good, but fantastic (Reloaded although I know you disagree, Bringing Down the House, X-Men 2) and Revolutions is still on the way. "Sequal Summer" has been a little bit of a let down overall but take heart, there is still time left and maybe something will surprise you.
my wife and i saw bad boyz 2 last saturday. we both loved it. tons of action, and absolutely hilarious. the language is pretty coarse, but i'm thick-skinned. and i love seeing martin and will together.
I hear Bad Boyz 2 is so packed with action, one liners, and explosions that there's no time to focus on a relatively bad story. Bittersweet reviews, but the intent is to relay the idea we will be entertained.
I've watched Bad Boyz 2 as well. I'll try to describe it as short as possible.
First there was National Security with pretty same looking story - an ex-cop and a securuity guard busted some mafia that had connections in the PD. Now we have 2 cops, who drive a Ferrari... Stop for one second, where do cops drive Ferraries? Anyways...
Dont think that i am a racist, but not only 2 main characters are black, but also everybody around them is either black or from some other immigrants' ethnic background. Movie keeps pushing the pattern of cool blacks and boring whites from the beginning. Anyways...
During gunfights and chases, camera was too unstable and shaky. Was it only me who noticed it? Scenes didnt look real - show Will for 1-2 secs, then switch to criminals, then back. Why not keep them all in frame? Chases and fights were thrilling, but not real enough...
After Martin's daughter is captured by Cuban mafia and taken to Cuba, brave Will and Martin decide to go in there by themselves and get hostages out. In the middle of an enemy state, 10 american cops are shooting with Cuban army and somehow managing to get away from them.
In overall movie looked like a hip-hop video clip in prolonged version.

There are hundreds of slow-paced films that I both enjoy and appreciate. However, in films like The Matrix series which feature stunts and special effects as well as the depth and symbolism that make less action-packed films enjoyable, there is simply more effort to appreciate. I agree that most heavily advertised films are brainless action capers, but even the intelligent ones are rarely without their dose of high-octane adventure. You can have as much story and purpose in a film as you like, but without some form of action or visual elegance to intrigue the viewer, such qualities will go unrecognised and therefore unappreciated.

Mike, I agree wholeheartedly. I much prefer fast paced action movies myself. Any "good" movie will have multiple elements that help to compose the high quality. Vette is absolutely right as well, I just wanted to express that these lulls in the industry happen all the time and had nothing to do with current movie making or the way movies will be from now on (bad).

I get this feeling, the overall impression of movie being made for the sake of making easy money. I can imagine myself producers writing a simple story line, buying cheap computer effects (one advantage of MReloaded over all the other movies - it's effects were really good), hiring immigrants to be shot because you can pay them less, and so on. Near the release of the movie they start advertisement campaign - that's spent most of the money on - and start collecting money from us, viewers who watch their 'art' because there is nothing else to watch. If there is demand then there is offer - it's us who watch the cheap movies and pay for them, and them who make these movies and become rich. Pure business and money - who cares about lack of content and fresh ideas and artistry?
This makes me wonder though if the quality of most "big" films are lowering their quality to reach more people with a smaller idea, or are they gradually lowering our intelectual involvement in movies in general?
And we the viewers eat it. Of course we will - we are used to watch movies. Right time to get rid of this habbit.
In short, are we being reduced as movie watchers or are the movies themselves being reduced? Either way, with all the movies being made today the percentage of engaging movies is getting slimmer. It is just too easy to pick out a film these days with more entertainment value than intellectual value.
what does that say about us?
We are being reduced, and movies themselves are being reduced as well. It's pure business now, as i have said before, and nobody cares about us. All of the today's films are built on entertainment with no intellectual part, and the entertainment part is done cheap and low quality.
What does that say about us? Only one thing - masses are degrading, taking what they are given.
Degradation of masses is another topic - i would like to discuss it with somebody who's interested.

Do you make yourself enjoy? Basically you tune yourself for dumb movie with car chases and explosions, and try to entertain yourself as much as possible because there is no real alternative. More of these movies you watch, more you get used to them, opening space for producers to lower movies' value even more... Where will we end up?

Yes that i cant argue. Effects in Matrix:R are good.
But for someone who does not appreciate those kinds of things, of course that person will not enjoy it.
To me, i love martial arts, and i love chases, and gun battles, and explosions, and so on. But if a movie consists only of those and especially cheap ones...
Originally posted by chezwhitey There is always a target audience for movies which determines how they set up advertising, and all the movies listed in the original thread are basically fast paced action style movies.
Those are ones that just KILLED me with their stupidity. Let me list the movies i watched lately that i think suck: Hulk, Terminator 3, BB 2, Tomb Raider (i went asleep when one of the gun battle scenes started ), LXG, Charlies Angels, ... Cant remember one that i liked. Not even one.
To say that all movies made nowadays are on the average worse you would have to include more types of movies. Movies like Holes, Finding Nemo, Bruce Almighty etc.. are completely different types of movies that were all decent.
Wait a second, that movie-cartoon about turtles and fished, all in colors - which one is it, Hles or Finding Nemo? Oh yea very decent movie...

Then please advise me a nice movie to watch that's not action packed and is targeted for mature audience. At least one.

X-Men 2 was the first movie i watched in this series of dumb films. Once again, imnot an XMan fan, have never read comix in past 10 years, but still - movies was awesomely boring, making me sleep about 30-40 min before it's end. I hope something surprises me, in good way...
About the quality of computer effects: if any of you saw LXG, you probably noticed the low-resolution texture used for hole in Nemo's ship that looked like in a Playstation game, and hulk-like monster sometimes looking like a flat picture - just like in computer game Duke Nukem 3D (if you played it).
Tomb Raider: what i thought was shaky camera is now obviously low-quality computer-made scene. I could notice them changing from real scene to computerised picture and back.
Etc.
"Do you make yourself enjoy? Basically you tune yourself for dumb movie with car chases and explosions, and try to entertain yourself as much as possible because there is no real alternative. did i say "sometimes i make myself enjoy going to a movie and watching cool special effects, high speed car chases and big objects explode."? no, i said "sometimes i just want to go to a movie and watch cool special effects, high speed car chases and big objects explode."
and as far as "More of these movies you watch, more you get used to them, opening space for producers to lower movies' value even more... " if people didn't enjoy watching these movies, they would QUIT GOING! and the studios would be forced to seek alternatives.
now, "Where will we end up?" hopefully cooler special effects, higher speed car chases and bigger objects exploding.
i say poh-tay-toe, you say pa-tah-toe.
you call them dumb movies. i call them nice diversions.
no, i said "sometimes i just want to go to a movie and watch cool special effects, high speed car chases and big objects explode.
The thing is i dont even see cool special effects, thrilling high speed car chases and scary explosions. Everything is performed very careless, without attention to details. Even special effects are not cool anymore.
Anyways it's up to you, if you like movies for their visual appearance - good for you. Remember what i said about getting used to them?
if people didn't enjoy watching these movies, they would QUIT GOING! and the studios would be forced to seek alternatives.
Yes. And that is what bothers me - dumb movies come out and people actually watch them! Im not saying that im smarter than everybody else... However, i noticed film-makers lowering the standards, and i bet you noticed it too.
now, "Where will we end up?" hopefully cooler special effects, higher speed car chases and bigger objects exploding.
We'll see what happens. Cooler special effects would be nuclear explosions here and there, cars are gonna go 500km/h running on hydrogen nuclear reactors, and bigger objects would go out of fashion - like in T3, cigarette pack sized energy cell is just enough to erase another Hirosima. Very cool.
i say poh-tay-toe, you say pa-tah-toe.
you call them dumb movies. i call them nice diversions.
I was going along with you "apparently" never having heard anything about the movie Seabicuit. I thought you were playing dumb and being silly so I went along with you. Not to offend you, but I am old enough to kick your ass.
Grizzlybear: How ya doing? Long time no see, short time for you and me!
I just skimmed some of the posts on this thread and it seemed Vette was a little sour on the latest flicks, so I thought I would help him out. I really enjoyed Seabiscuit and he comes up with, "is that a toon?" C,mon dude. Anyway, he deserved a good backhand to snap him out of his negative attitude...me thought.
He was right about League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I had to watch The Rock again last night to restore my faith in my man Sean Connery.
Thanks for the support...you can be my corner man.
I was going along with you "apparently" never having heard anything about the movie Seabicuit.
Something wrong with me never having heard anything about Seabiscuit?
I thought you were playing dumb and being silly so I went along with you.
No i was not.
Not to offend you, but I am old enough to kick your ass.
LOL Strength comes and goes with age - older people are not necessarily stronger than young Also i asked how old are you because you seem to like a movie that looks like a toon (at least, i thought so) - and you responded in this aggressive manner.
I just skimmed some of the posts on this thread and it seemed Vette was a little sour on the latest flicks, so I thought I would help him out.
Thank you.
I really enjoyed Seabiscuit and he comes up with, "is that a toon?"
So? Lots of times i see short part of a movie without knowing it's name, i get the impression, but i dont know the name. Why do you make a big deal of it?
C,mon dude. Anyway, he deserved a good backhand to snap him out of his negative attitude...me thought.
Never asked for parental attitude either.
He was right about League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I had to watch The Rock again last night to restore my faith in my man Sean Connery.
LOL Watch 'The Rock' 10 more times and you will fall in love with him You also should pray on him every morning when you wake up and every evening when you go to bed: "My enlightenment, my angel, my god - only you, Sean Connery" Keep doing it - one day you will see a difference in your life
Seabiscuit was very good (but paled in comparison to the book). I think there must be a movie for every taste from the diversionary to the serious. I also really liked Life is Beautiful; Spirited Away; Green Mile; Shawshank Redemption; Crouchin Tiger Hidden Dragon, Schindler's List; Les Miserables and, for comedies, Mony Python's Holy Grail; Young Frankenstein; Blazing Saddles; Waking Ned Divine; the Castle, the list goes on and on. So many good movies.
There are a lot of very good movies. One of the best i have watched are Matrix (not Reloaded), LOTR (a lil too long), Terminator 2, X-Files, Robocop (the movie), Weekend at Bernie's, ... So many very nice movies, i dont argue that! But latest ones are just plainly dumb. BTW i still didnt see Johnny English, gotta go watch it, as well as Seabiscuit (you convinced me, ShivaDog! ).
all I have to say is I loved Pirates of the Caribbean and that was an awsome movie, Just Married was good and very funny, I could list alot of good movies, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was good, and Lord of the Rings, and Tomb Raider 2, and Black Hawk Down, and I can go on forever, and even Finding Nemo!!!Thats all that comes to mid, but there is tons of modern-day movies that I love.
I tend to agree with MrJukoVette about a lot of the movies these days and I rarely recommend one. What I liked about Seabiscuit is that when I walked out of the theatre, I actually "felt good." I didn't feel neutral or like I'd been had...again. Like with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I suffered through that one. Sean Connery is back in my good graces after watching The Rock again. By the way, MrJukoVette, The Matrix is the only movie I have ever watched 10 times! Hejimony, when I got home from watching Seabiscuit, I looked him up on the internet and I was amazed at his story. I look forward to reading the book.
Another one I liked and recommended to a friend was Frequency. My friend rented it at Blockbuster, put it in the VCR and hit "play." Then his VCR went on the blink and he couldn't get the movie out. So he took his VCR down to Blockbuster and told them their movie was inside...and you can have the VCR too! I invited him over to my house to watch it and when I put it in my VCR, the same thing happened! We got the movie out but my VCR got replaced with DVD the next day. So beware, Frequency is aptly named in more ways than one.
MrJukoVette: I will be most interested in your review! ???
I think the movies of today either don't leave anything to the imagination (i.e., nudity, sex); too gross (i.e., bloody); too vulgar; and the stars of today get so much money for one film that they have their noses stuck in the air a little too far, not like the stars of yester-year. I'd rather see a disney movie today than some of the filth coming on the Big Screen. There are some of them worth seeing, but most of them are trash. I'm sure there's many of you who don't agree; however, this is just my opinion. I guess the older you get the more moral you become.
Originally posted by ShivaDog Another one I liked and recommended to a friend was Frequency.
I absolutely loved Frequency. When I saw the previews for it, I thought that it would be boring, and wouldn't hold my attention at all. We watched it last year, while on vacation, and I ended up seeing it 2 more times, during that week. Loved it. I thought that the story line was intriguing, and it kept my attention the entire way through. I loved the ending, and how father and son worked together, in different era's, to make some awesome changes. I would recommend this movie to anyone who's looking for a Friday night rental, or to just buy the dvd. I don't think that your money would be wasted at all.
Hey, thanks for the response. I couldn't agree more with you about Frequency. I am a huge baseball fan so the 1969 Amazin' Mets brought back some memories and the father/son relationship was done beautifully. It took you back to the basics regarding "typical family life" that keeps you grounded. Also, I love to theorize about wild ideas such as "simultaneous universes" and the like and the the way that was done in the movie was quite unique. To be honest, I am rather surprised that the movie didn't become the talk of the town like some other loser movies I know! Frequency... the way movies are supposed to be made.

Haven't seen Pirates of the Carribean but my daughter liked it and we both loved Seabiscuit. I live near Santa Anita Racetrack and love that place and we have an Arabian so maybe I am a little biased about horse movies but this one has a lot of the same positive messages in it that KJPotter talked about with Frequency. Seabiscuit was a movie with a theme about overcoming adversity and never giving up.
