I have read so many of the postings here, and almost NO one talks about Ms Umbridge! What a wonderful character!

JKR made me hate that woman so much, that I projected all my awful teachers, all the people I don't like and all the characteristics I don't like onto her.

I don't think I have EVER hated any character like that. Snape doesn't even come close to this! He had a good reason - whether some might disagree - but childhood pains can change you into a bitter man!

When the Centuars got hold of Umbrige.. I was soooo dissapointed. I really wanted them to take her to Aragorg or somewhere. I wanted the little spiders to eat her alive!!! HAHA. Or I wanted Grawp to use her as a baseball bat or something. But, needless to say.. it is a book for all ages. The violence I needed to get rid of her, simply can't be written.

What are your opinions about Doloris Umbridge?

Well, we have talked about her in the thread about Characters that we hate. But, we can start one on just her.

I don't like her, but she still brought a lot of new development to the story. And, I hope that it isn't the last that we've seen of her.

Boy 'o Boy, was Umbridge an evil woman or what?

When I was reading the first few chapters of the book and they started talking about the toad looking woman at Harry's hearing, I had this feeling that something was up and that we'd be seeing this woman again. I had no idea that she would be at Hogwarts.

I felt the same way MARRIES did. I really don't ever remembering hating a certain character so much, either in books, movies, or television as much as I hated Umbridge. From the first time she gave that long winded speech, i could literally feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I guess you have to give JKR so much credit for creating such a colorful and sinister character. What I'm more excited about is when they film book 5 (if it ever gets filmed), who would play Umbridge?

I can't even imagine who will play that evil little woman. I will have to give that some serious thought. But she does give me the creeps!!! Like a snake...

Umbridge was the most boring character in the book. When I started to read the book, I thought Tonks'll be the DADA teacher (JKR said the teacher will be female), she would have been really cool but this Umbridge woman, she isn't even as hate-able as Snape (at least to me). By now all DADA teachers were, like, really important in some way - either connected to Voldemort or werewolves but Umbridge is SO **ordinary**
I really hoped JKR will surprise us with another dark secret of new DADA teacher and Umbridge was simply a **birocrate** soooo boring

I don't think I would agree that Umbridge was boring.

Yes, umbridge was just a regular witch from the ministry, but I think that that's why she was so evil and hated. Snape hated Harry because of Snapes past and he wanted to take it out on Harry. But he never went as far as Umbridge.

Umbridge crossed the line the very first day and never looked back. She inflicted physical pain on students (during detention), banned Harry and the twins from Quidditch forever, created ridiculous rules that turned the school into a prison.

I think Umbridge represented how the ministry and most of its members really felt about Harry and Dumbledore.

One great thing about this book was that the characters become so much more defined. Those that could be described as a little bland (Ginny, McGonnagal, even Hermione) became brilliant and super-cool. I loved how awesome Dumbledore was in the few scenes JKR afforded him ("Ah yes, I thought we'd hit that snag... you seem to be laboring under the delusion that I'm going to... 'come quietly'...", or how he strolled up the hall facing Voldemort, calling him "Tom." Yeah, Dumbledore is my hero. )

And the evil characters became downright hate-able. (Although I was a bit disappointed with Voldemort himself, he was way scarier in GofF) We'll see more from Umbridge later, no character has completely disappeared from this series, even Lockhart got a little encore.

Not all the DADA teachers were connected with voldermort, Lockhart never had a connection and neither did Lupin really his connection was more towards James, it was only Quirrel who had a real connection with Voldermort.

As for Umbridge I agree she was horrible, the hate was instantanious with the first speech when she interrupted Dumbledore. She is a power hungry beep beep and just wants to be the top dog, so she wants to remove Harry and Dumbledore from the picture.

I think Umbridge was horrible, but was necessary for the book. Putting a bad guy inside Hogwarts was a good move. Harry is protected inside Hogwarts and Umbridge all most brought Hogwarts down. I think that in the 6th book I would like to see a Dark arts teacher that is a friend for Harry, as Lupin was in book three.

Let's not forget Moody (or at least who we thought was Moody.) Barty Crouch Jr. had a far closer connection with Voldemort owing to years of unwavering support. Regarding Umbridge, I both love and hate the character. I hate her because she, as a character, posesses all the qualities that p**s people off. What I love is that JKR can bring that sort of hatred out of me with a fictional character.

I can't quite understand some of the comments against Snape on this and other threads. Even before we got to see some of his back story, I liked him. He is intended to be one of those characters who you can enjoy disliking. This interpretation was confirmed for me when they decided to cast Alan Rickman in the role for the films.

I agree with you about how JKR can bring out hatred in us toward a character(s). Umbridge was easy to dislike from the very beginning when Harry went to his trial and she was starring at him evilly. And then, she just got worse, and worse over the course of the book.

I agree that Umbridge was horrible, and that her character was all the same a wonderful idea on JKRs behalf, the first 4 books sort of fitted into a mold they were all different but became predictable as to where you would find the main climax and plot but she completely blew that mold apart with this book and it was a brave move because everyone had become accustomed to the typical Potter story as wonderful as they all are, I am in no way putting any of them down they are all wonderful books.
