Choosing the finalists

Does anyone have an idea who actually chooses the contestants to move on to the next round of Fame? Even though there are three judges, it doesn't necessarily mean they choose the finalists. They could just be there giving constructive criticism to the contestants. Is it the producer who chooses the finalists? The producer and the three judges maybe? Does anyone think the finalists are chosen *before* they give their performances? I'm curious to know because I wonder how objective this whole process is, and I'd like to know on what criteria are the contestants being judged? I believe there have been some very talented people who did not make the final three, and I was wondering if they didn't make it because they weren't what the judges (or whoever decides) were looking for or if whoever was making the decision was trying to spice up the show a little and get people talking.

As they say on the show, the panelists HELP to decide who will move onto the finals. I think the producers have the last say and are choosing people they decide the show needs, whether its because of their talent, style, personality, whatever it is that they think these finalists will bring to the show to make it more interesting to the viewers. Out of the panelists, Johnny is probably the only one who really may be able to participate in the producer's decision because it is his label that the winner's single will be produced on, the others are just there to give constructive criticism like you mentioned.

this may also explain why the audience did not always agree with the choices for the night and the panelists' comments. Because the producers are most involved in choosing these individuals, whatever criteria they are using was probably developed and affirmed over the time that they were training with debbie allen and not based solely on that night's performance.
