| It boggles my mind, when very positive comments are directed toward singers with questionable intonation and poor phrasing.
I think people have lost or forgotten the ability to interpret what the "soul" of music is all about.
I am speaking in regard to a singer that I saw on You-Tube recently. Her name will remain anonymous.
When listening to the singer, I couldn't but help listen to the beautiful phrasing and emotion the accompanist (piano player) was providing in the background for the singer. NOW, this guy has  ...Soul!!
But, the majority of people commented on how "incredible" the singer was.....albeit, she has a warm tone, and nice color to her voice, but she is never quite on pitch and she sings all her phrases the same.....LIKE A SWEET FOG HORN BLASTING AWAY.
Call me old fashioned, but isn't music supposed to have many degrees of dynamics to be interesting, or do people only care about charisma, stage presence, and power all the time?
Its funny that I should mention the piano player who IS supposed to be "sort-of" in the background, providing a rich music-scape for the singer to express all the talent the singer has to offer.....It is rather ironic that no one commented on the great playing the piano guy did, but instead bolstered the image of the rather "angular" singer.
These two people are friends of mine, and I wish they remain anonymous. I am only offering my 2 bits worth.
Moral of the story..........The next time you listen to a performance, take into account...."What is it i am really hearing?" | |
