My solution to combat planet CO2. |
| Posted by: Edward Teach | | I have probably the most simple solution that should win me the Pulitzer Prize and it's so dog gone easy it's rediculus.
Plant more trees! Maybe even more Kudzu! If you don't know what Kudzu is let me know.
Why? Because our planet lives on CO2. That's right the planet lives on CO2.
Any Junior High student knows that plants take in CO2 and produce O2 commonly refered to as Oxygen.
This is probably the biggest reason to NOT clearcut the Rain Forests.
The cool thing about this is that everyone can do their part. Plant a tree, grow a garden plant some flowers etc.
So what'd ya think, am I on to something? | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: EUCLID | | That would help because plants consume CO2. Today it was announced that Richard Branson and Al Gore have teamed up and are offering a $25 million prize to anyone who can figure out a way to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. They have not yet told us how much unwanted CO2 is in the atmosphere, so I wonder how much they want to remove. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: h@ts | | Only problem I can see is not everyone has acres of land to plant forests, woods, trees or even a few plants. But anyone who has the space it can't do any harm.
| quote: |
"The scientific opinion is that we have a ceiling of 440 parts per million (ppm) of atmospheric carbon before there is a tipping point, a step change in the rate of global warming," Professor Smith said. "The rate at which we are emitting now, around 2ppm a year and rising, we could expect that that tripping point will reach us in 20 years' time. That gives us 10 years to develop technologies that could start to bite into the problem."

Good luck with that one.

| Posted by: EUCLID | | The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has indicated that stabilizing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations at "moderate" levels might require cutting fossile fuel use by 60 to 80 percent worldwide. Kyoto member countries might have to cut much more in order to balance the rising emissions of developing countries such as China and India which Kyoto exempts from compliance. China is building 562 new coal fired power plants, at the rate of one every five days.
I don't know why any green minded person would not boycott Chinese products. | | Reply To this Message

Boycott whoever you like, but don't China make EVERYTHING?
No-one's immune from the effects of global warming, including China, so they are going to have to do something, but they're on an economic roll right now, but still producing less carbon than the US.

The architects of Kyoto REQUIRE the U.S. and European countries to do something about MMGW now, but they do not require any such action by China. And China is not volunteering to do it. True, China is producing less carbon than the U.S., but that will soon reverse. Why do green minded people think it is OK for China to be on an economic roll at the expense of the environment while it is not OK for the U.S. to be on one?
P.S. China does make, or is on the way to making EVERYTHING, but they would not be if people didn't buy it. The green consumer is in the driver seat. It is solely the choice of the green consumer as to whether or not to be a hypocrite.

I don't personally think it's okay for China to continue polluting the way they are, but like India, they are a developing country. The goods that China makes are also the goods we import and buy.

Companies have moved to China because the labour is cheap, laws and working rules slack, and the goods are made as we like them - cheap, throwaway and plentiful. China is every capitalist's dream come true.

And I'm sure many green consumers look into products before buying them, or they wouldn't really be "green consumers".

| Posted by: venushalley | | I agree that is a good solution. There is lots of unused land in the world (I got the chance to travel through russia this summer... yeah, they got more land that they will be ever able to use ). | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: EUCLID | | Planting trees will help, but to really solve the problem as it is presented, we need to stop using electricity and stop driving cars. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: lodgebo01 | | We don't have to stop using electricity just change the way it is generated. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: WillJ | | Um...the U.S. still pollutes more than China, so any boycott of China would constitute a boycott of any U.S. productions. | | Reply To this Message

I agree. For example, it bother the hell out of me, when in my school they shut the window blinds and turn on the lights (we have really big windows in many rooms, so just let the day light in). The lights should not be used in the day, if not needed.
Same with aircondtioning, do we really need to have some 15°C in the buildings during summer?

| Posted by: irfan_arif | | Planting trees is a good solution to it, but don't forget that trees are only a method of carbon sequestration, it's only a temporary solution, so it'll finally go down to efficiency, technology development, and revolutionary government policies. | | Reply To this Message
