Carl Levin wants to bring home the troops 4-6 months from now. There is a feeling that withdrawing the troops too fast will hasten Iraq’s slide into civil war. However, that seems like inhumane treatment of our troops. How would you like to be spending the next 6 months over there under the premise that your presence in that hell hole serves no constructive purpose whatsoever, and that the entire effort was wasted with nothing good accomplished? And how would you like to spend that time with the Iraqi opposition getting bolder all the time as the fixed pullout date draws near? Would you wonder what kind of a stunt the opposition might pull as a final sendoff for the last of the troops. Maybe they would just grab the last hundred or so and behead them on the Internet.
No. The game changes the minute you say you intend to take the troops out, not when you actually take the troops out. So if we are going to quit, lets get the troops out today. If it’s a lost cause shouldn’t we stop the dying? Get them home for Christmas.
As far as Iraq sliding into civil war, I would think the quicker we get out, the quick Iraq will stabilize, thus averting a civil war. Is this not what we have been told? Let’s end the bloodshed today. Bring home the troops, and then apologize. And to show them we mean it, send massive aid to help rebuild Iraq. Get Iran and Syria in there to help. Send some aid to them to show our appreciation. | |
