U.S. Marine Unlawfully Killed TV Reporter, Coroner Rules
A reporter for Britain's Independent Television News service (ITN) was the victim of unlawful homicide committed by a U.S. marine in Iraq, a coroner in Oxford, England ruled today (Friday). Terry Lloyd, who was injured when caught in crossfire between Iraqi and American forces, was killed when shot in the head by a gunner on a U.S. tank as a civilian vehicle attempted to rescue him. After a six-day inquest, Assistant Deputy Coroner Andrew Walker ruled, "Had this killing taken place under English Law it would have constituted an unlawful homicide. I shall write to the attorney general and the director of public prosecutions with a view to considering the appropriate steps to bring the persons involved in this incident to justice." ITN Editor-in-Chief David Mannion announced that the TV news service would work "to bring those responsible for Terry's death to account before a court of law. ... Terry Lloyd was killed in an unlawful act by a US Marine who fired directly at the civilian minibus in which Terry, already badly injured, lay helpless." However, he said, ITN had not been able to learn the identity of the marine who shot him. |
