Special Relativity
Newton's laws of motion give us a complete description of the behavior moving objects at low speeds. The laws are different at speeds reached by the particles at SLAC.
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity describes the motion of particles moving at close to the speed of light. In fact, it gives the correct laws of motion for any particle. This doesn't mean Newton was wrong, his equations are contained within the relativistic equations. Newton's "laws" provide a very good approximate form, valid when v is much less than c. For particles moving at slow speeds (very much less than the speed of light), the differences between Einstein's laws of motion and those derived by Newton are tiny. That's why relativity doesn't play a large role in everyday life. Einstein's theory supercedes Newton's, but Newton's theory provides a very good approximation for objects moving at everyday speeds.
Einstein's theory is now very well established as the correct description of motion of relativistic objects, that is those traveling at a significant fraction of the speed of light.
Because most of us have little experience with objects moving at speeds near the speed of light, Einstein's predictions may seem strange. However, many years of high energy physics experiments have thoroughly tested Einstein's theory and shown that it fits all results to date.

09/27/06 11:20 PDT
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)
The San Francisco branch of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission today announced a settlement in a sexual harassment lawsuit on behalf of several female workers of a Sunnyvale KFC/Taco Bell.
The EEOC's lawsuit alleges that the Hollenbeck Avenue restaurant's manager repeatedly approached the women with unwelcome sexual advances, creating a hostile work environment.
Harman-Chiu Inc., which operates the franchise, denied the allegations but agreed to settle the case for $349, 800 and significant injunctive relief. In addition to this resolution, Harman-Chiu has been ordered to place a notice in the work place outlining its complaint procedure and harassment policy in both English and Spanish. Additionally, the settlement stipulates that the manager will send a letter of apology to each of the three plaintiffs.
"We are pleased with this settlement, which avoids protracted litigation, provides important relief, and allows the women to move on with their lives," said EEOC San Francisco regional attorney William R. Tamayo.
"In today's diverse workplace, employers must be extra vigilant in preventing harassment against immigrant employees, many of whom are particularly vulnerable because they don't know their rights or are reluctant to speak out against unlawful conduct for fear of retaliation," Tamayo said. | | Reply To this Message

Reuters News Service
WARSAW, Poland - A Polish woman who grew marijuana to calm the nerves of her cow has been charged with cultivating a narcotic by police in the western town of Lobez.
The cow had been "skittish and unruly" -- once breaking a person's arm -- until someone suggested mixing cannabis in with its feed, the woman told police.
"The cow became as calm as a lamb," the 55-year-old woman said, according to the PAP news agency.
The woman's plants, grown from seeds she bought at a market, reached nearly three yards tall and were extremely potent, police said.
Marijuana possession is a crime throughout Poland. The woman faces up to three years in jail if convicted. | | Reply To this Message

Associated Press
BEIJING — A drunken Chinese migrant worker jumped into a panda enclosure at the Beijing Zoo, was bitten by the bear and retaliated by chomping down on the animal's back, state media said Wednesday.
Zhang Xinyan, from the central province of Henan, drank four jugs of beer at a restaurant near the zoo before visiting Gu Gu the panda on Tuesday, the Beijing Morning Post said.
"He felt a sudden urge to touch the panda with his hand," and jumped into the enclosure, the newspaper said.
The panda, who was asleep, was startled and bit Zhang, 35, on the right leg, it said. Zhang got angry and kicked the panda, who then bit his other leg. A tussle ensued, the paper said.
"I bit the fellow in the back," Zhang was quoted as saying in the newspaper. "Its skin was quite thick."
Other tourists yelled for a zookeeper, who got the panda under control by spraying it with water, reports said. Zhang was hospitalized.
Newspaper photographs showed Zhang lying on a hospital bed with blood-soaked bandages and a seam of stitches running down his leg.
The Beijing Youth Daily quoted Zhang as saying that he had seen pandas on television and "they seemed to get along well with people."
"No one ever said they would bite people," Zhang said. "I just wanted to touch it. I was so dizzy from the beer. I don't remember much."
Ye Mingxia, a spokeswoman for the Beijing Zoo, confirmed the incident happened but would not give any details. She said Gu Gu was "healthy."
"We're not considering punishing him now," Ye said in a telephone interview. "He's suffered quite a bit of shock." | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | Oprah Winfrey
By Jason Kovar
Acceptance to New Age ideas have gushed forth into peoples living rooms via television shows and motion pictures for decades, and society is quickly warming up to them. In objection to God's Word, Satan is deceiving the world with empty promises of heaven and peppering them for the wrath of God that is to be revealed on the sons of disobedience.
Perhaps no example of such a pawn of disobedience is better than Oprah Winfrey. Life magazine called Oprah "The Most Powerful Woman in America." Biography magazine included her in the list of the "25 Most Powerful Women in America." A one-woman entertainment empire, her influence extends around the world. Time magazine named her as one of the most important people of the century, writing: "Winfrey stands as a beacon, not only in the worlds of media and entertainment but also on the larger realm of public discourse." She is trumpeted as a model over comer for millions around the world because of her alacrity to pull herself up by her bootstraps. But this is not the complete story, as we shall see.
Known as "The Queen of the Talk Shows," Oprah Winfrey could also be called the Queen of the New Age. Her ideological presentations and touching emotional displays have catapulted her show into the public's consciousness year after year. Because of her immense swaying power and ability to appear before millions every day without fail, Oprah Winfrey is spiritually one of the most dangerous women on the face of the planet. Oprah has admitted to coming into contact with what is called the Universal Hum. Roseanne, also a New Ager, has admitted to an initiation into this hum and occultist Jimmy Page wrote in his song Stairway to Heaven that, "Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know." Page admits that Stairway, the most popular song ever in America, was given to him by the spirit world via automatic writing. Others who have had contact with the occult attest to a sinister type of ringing or humming that lulls the mind and body in preparation for advanced occult indoctrination.
Oprah claims that once she broke into the other side, she encountered the sense of empowerment she sought for. This insidious pursuit of empowerment has led to selling her soul to demonic spirits for ingenious perpetration and temporal gain. Blatantly honest about her reliance on the spirit realm, Winfrey has said:
"I ask God for grace, and the power of the spirits....Calling on you. Calling on you...I really believe I can call her up. Her and so many others. I'm counting on them"
Satan is counting on her too.
What is Oprah's purpose? She reveals the focus of her work to be geared for the directing of the masses. She states:
"The gist being how do people lead their lives? How can we help them do it better? In every aspect of their lives, how can we lead them to their truth? First we must be led to our own. Who are we? What do we stand for? What do we believe?" (Beloved'98p135)
Craftily scheming to pinpoint how people live their lives, the heavy guns of her work are aimed directly at the mainstream public, at you. Jesus said: "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that no man comes to the Father but through Me." Contrary to Jesus Christ, Oprah wants to lead people away from the central truths she claims are her roots to false hopes which will not grant entrance into heaven. Oprah believes in using her life as a puppet for Satan's ruthless assault on mankind, and is subsequently leading people into the fires of hell empowered by demonic forces. In fact, Oprah takes her marching orders for her entertainment empire directly from the spirit world. Time magazine wrote of these spirit guides:
"Oprah Winfrey calls these her 'go there' moments, spiritual episodes of divine guidance that far transcend the chatty exchanges with her studio audiences- Sometimes the epiphanies carry the voices of Negro slaves-Joe and Emily and Dara; Sue and Bess and Sara. Winfrey says that she has come to know each of them personally and calls them in at will to guide her in her work. The spirits began visiting her a few years ago..."
All of the world's heralding of Oprah's great successes is little more than a surrendered compliance to governance by demonic spirits. These spirits are using her to construct the new theological mindset of the masses, ministering their doctrines of demons to society. Apropos, Oprah has always referred to her show as a "ministry." Subverting Christian values through the support of a New Age forum of all types, this change-agent is taking direct aim at ushering in the New Age practices into the hearts of the world, formatting her talk show as "change your life television."
Satan's primary target is the assault upon God's Word. By dismissing Scriptural facts for feelings, the satanic agenda moves people from the truth to that of emotional feeling. Feelings are powerful winds of change and Satan is pawning Oprah as a catalyst toward a feelings oriented culture. This principle has been used effectively in occult societies to convert initiates for centuries. Via her demonic inspiration, Oprah is using the same methodology of occult societies to supplant truth with emotion by teaching that: "the path to self awareness is what you feel, not what you think." A life simply governed by feelings would quickly fall prey to the broad path that Jesus warned would be followed by many. Satan has definitely found a real nugget in this occult evangelist, as Oprah's show is little more than a soapbox for her preachy sermons that send out her broad nets for the unsuspecting soul.
Oprah has done many charitable things and is always at the forefront of doing righteous deeds on behalf of others. This should be of no great surprise as the Scriptures tell us that:
"Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve." (2 Corinthians 11: 14-15)
Satan knows that he cannot reveal himself in all his evil as a fallen angel bound for eternal hellfire and still expect the world to willingly follow him. Therefore it is imperative that he belies the world with acts of "righteousness" so that he can appear to be something wonderful to those he seeks to deceive. Through demon possession, Satan can be very persuasive and debonair, all the while laughing at his subtle victories over those who refuse to comply with the protection God offers. Oprah freely confesses to demonic possession as a tool to enhance her influencing performances before the camera. She said:
"I tried to empty myself and let the spirit of Sethe inhabit me...Every morning, before my scenes, I lit candles and said the names of these slaves. I prayed every day to the ancestors."
Oprah's motion picture, Beloved, gives an account of a woman who is haunted by the spirit of her dead daughter; which is a Biblically condemned story that advocates communication with the dead. Expressing her strong agreement to cinematically express such themes, Oprah recalls her conversation with Beloved's author Toni Morrison. She stated:
"I told her I'd just read the book and what it meant to me and how I felt so strongly that the world needed to hear this story, and the way to do it was through film."
Oprah sought after demonic possession in order to elicit a superior acting performance whereby she might gain a greater influence over her viewers. Beloved's Director, Jonathon Demme, who is also the director of The Silence of the Lambs, recalled:
"Oprah had explained to me when we originally met that it was her goal and intention to channel the spirit of Margaret Garner...This very infusion of humanity past accounts to a significant degree for Oprah's stunning alchemy, her astonishing abandonment of self in her Beloved performance."
Oscar nominated M. Night Shyamalan, directed The Sixth Sense, a movie that wholeheartedly propagated communication with the dead. In reference to his movies ability to open people up to the occult traditions of mediumship with spirits, Shyamalan has acknowledged the educating capability of film, stating: "Film can be a version of faith. You learn to believe." People learn to believe through film because the makers of film are teaching them to do so. One hundred years ago, anything taught in the dark was considered to be immoral and embarrassingly unworthy of being proclaimed in the open. Today, we have a whole generation of people who are going to school and learning evil from films in dark movie theatres. The Scriptures instruct us contrary so as not to be caught unaware:
"But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet." (1 Thessalonians 5:4-8)
Oprah's demonic submissions spit in the face of the Creator of the universe. Jesus Christ died for you, was buried and rose again on the third day, and calls you to repentance. His Law condemns you and unless you receive His grace you are doomed. He wants to save you. He even wants to save Oprah Winfrey, but her refusal and status as a bondservant of Satan will not allow it; He will not force anyone to follow Him. Romans 2:5-8 deals with the "Oprah's" who continue to proudly reject God's grace:
Follow Jesus and be wise in this life. Turn from any sin in your life and receive the forgiveness that he offers. His hand is extended out toward you, you just have to humble yourself and accept His mercy. If you have already done so, guard yourself and your family from the evil influences all around and allow no evil thing to be before your eyes. Satan is playing for keeps and desires to drag as many as possible into eternal hellfire with Him. We must resist him by standing fast in the faith so that the victory will be ours and so we might hear Him say, "Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord." | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: HECK! | | William Howard Taft September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was an American politician; the 27th President of the United States, the 10th Chief Justice of the United States; a leader of the progressive conservative wing of the Republican Party in the early twentieth century; a chaired professor at Yale Law School; a pioneer in international arbitration; and a staunch advocate of world peace that verged on pacifism (though the pacifists of his time did not call him one of their own).
Taft served as Solicitor General of the United States, a federal judge, Governor-General of the Philippines, and Secretary of War before being nominated for President in the 1908 Republican National Convention with the backing of his predecessor and close friend Theodore Roosevelt.
His presidency was characterized by trust-busting, strengthening the Interstate Commerce Commission, expanding the civil service, establishing a better postal system, and promoting world peace. Taft defeated Roosevelt for the Republican nomination in a bruising battle in 1912. In 1921, he became Chief Justice and is the only President to have served on the Supreme Court of the United States.

MILFORD, New Hampshire (AP) -- A teddy bear has been implicated in 2,500 deaths -- trout deaths, that is.
State officials say a teddy bear that fell into a pool at a Fish and Game Department hatchery earlier this month clogged a drain. The clog blocked the flow of oxygen to the pool and suffocated the fish.
Hatcheries supervisor Robert Fawcett said the bear, dressed in yellow raincoat and hat, is believed to be the first stuffed toy to cause fatalities at the facility.
"We've had pipes get clogged, but it's usually with more naturally occurring things like a frog or even a dead muskrat," he said. "This one turned out to be a teddy bear and we don't know how it got there."
The deaths prompted Fawcett to release a written warning: "RELEASE OF ANY TEDDY BEARS into the fish hatchery water IS NOT PERMITTED."
He said it's not known who dropped the bear, but urged anyone whose bear ends up in a hatchery pool to find a worker to remove it. "They might save your teddy bear, and keep it from becoming a killer," he said.

George Michael 'had drugs in car'
POSTED: 7:07 a.m. EDT, October 2, 2006
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Pop star George Michael has been arrested and cautioned after being found once again slumped over the wheel of his car in London and in possession of cannabis, British media said on Monday.
The Sun tabloid splashed the story that Michael had been arrested across its front page. It was his fourth motoring incident in eight months, including three involving him being asleep at the wheel, the newspaper said.
A police spokesman said a 43-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday, cautioned by police for having an illegal drug on him and released on bail pending inquiries on being unfit to drive.
"At about 3.22 am (0222 GMT) on Sunday morning officers were informed of a stationary vehicle with a driver inside causing an obstruction" in north London, the spokesman said, declining to confirm the identity of the driver as a matter of routine.
He was taken briefly to hospital as a precautionary measure.
The singer's partner, Kenny Goss, told The Sun that Michael had nothing to say. "He's fine and I've got him a McDonald's," he said.
In February, Michael was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs and admitted it had been his "own stupid fault."
The musician has sold more than 80 million records throughout his career and enjoyed as much fame as a solo artist as he did as frontman of the band Wham!.
Michael is no stranger to controversy. He was arrested in April 1998 for engaging in a "lewd act" in a public toilet in Los Angeles, after which he ended years of speculation over his sexuality by announcing that he was gay.
The creator of hits including "Last Christmas" and "Careless Whisper" wrote a song "Outside" and based the accompanying video on the infamous public restroom incident. |
