I never had any love for the dude, and you could kind of see him going this way eventually... but it's kind of shocking, really.

Stingray kills 'Crocodile Hunter'
SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin, 44 was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.

Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.

Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catch phrase "Crikey!"

But his image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then 1-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo. (Full story)

In a statement released to Australian media, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorrow and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.

In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s Australian Story television program about how he was perceived in his home country.

"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said, the ABC reported.

"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. "You know, there's this... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty'."

Quite sad really, I liked the guy I thought he did a lot of good conservation work in Australia and abroad and apparently his enthusatic approach has led to a lot of children becoming intrested in protecting Australia's endangred animals. Who knows maybe in 10 years his duaghter will pick up what her old man did.

It is unsusal though to be killed by a Stingray but it sounds like he went pretty quickly. Seems the barb went into his heart and then there is the massive dose of venom he was probably dead before he could gather what had happend. I think Gabomans right we always knew he was going out this way but hey he died doing what he loved to do not many people will get that chance.

ah crap!

I always thought it would be funny to lose this dude, as he was a butt with that child dangling thing, and he was always tempting fate. Kind of a jerk really.

But death is so real, and I find I really am shocked and saddened by his death. It's really sad. Poor guy.

It's a blow to the Australian Celebrity front. Steve Irwin was one of the most Famous Aussies, next to Rolf Harris. Whether you like him or hate him I'm sure that he will be missed.

Hey I know who Rolf is, and don't forget Olivia Newton John. But this is about Steve, I know my kids grew up with Steve on the TV. My son (16) was all broken up over it. He felt really bad because he knew Steve had a wife and little kids.

What I liked about Steve was that his programs were better than the usual nature progarms you get, things like Crocodile Hunter took you close up to the animals and gave you a better understanding. I heard today that Steve never once used a script just his knowledge of the animal that he was dealing with, if that is true then it's pretty impressive when you consider all the shows he did.

I was really saddened to hear this when I awoke this morning. Although the incident with his baby brought a lot of criticism on him, I think most of the world quickly forgave him and love what he brought to the world -- a unique understanding of crocodiles and other reptiles while exhibiting wonderous enthusiasm for his profession. As for me, Steve will be sorely missed.

He did, and I think that in particular is what will make his death so hard... but perhaps more like him will rise from the ashes, as they say.

I feel bad for his family. But dude went out doing his job, what he loved doing. It was a really dangerous occupation and you can only risk it all so many times before... well, you know. He was aware of that and still went out there. Wrestling croc's and picking up deadly snakes is nuts. To be honest, I am surprised he wasn't jacked up long ago.

Suffice to say he was a lot more brave around wildlife than I will ever be and I gotta respect all the land he bought to protect, too.

It's only been something like 4 decades since someone was killed by a Stingray. It was a freak accident in which the barb on the tail pierced his heart. 1 in billion odds.

Totally, but I was speaking more in general terms. Either a stingray, croc, snake... something he's poked or picked up over the years.

I watched something on Animal Planet about his life, I guess it was filmed in 2000. He has always been in front of a camera and at the age of 6 they showed him jumping out of a boat and onto a croc. His dad pulled them both out of the water and he just didn't let go. It was very interesting and I wish I would have recorded it.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I never expected him to go out this way. A stingray getting him like that just shows that when your time is up it is up. We never know how long we have on this world, and we should make the most of it. My condolence go out to all those that loved him.

I just can't say I was shocked. I mean, if a meteor hit him or some kind of non-job hazard took his life then yeah. Total bummer though, dude obviously had a lot of fans. I really didn't watch his show that much.

I started saying 'crikey' before he did. I was into it before it was cool.
For a while there I felt as though he was kinda... giving my country a slightly bad image. But, you know. When all is said and done, he did pretty good things for Australia. It really is sad to lose him.

If crocs go to heaven, they'll be kicking themselves.

Etymology of 'crikey'

Euphemism for Christ, first recorded 1838.

I have a friend who swears he saw Tupac after he died. But the Crocodile dude went out on video. The news said he pulled that deal out of his chest before going down. Sounds like some action movie battle scene. But totally different. Wasn't this guy in a movie?

I would agree that he was into exploitation of animals, and messed with them, agitated them, etc. for drama, but he didn't deserve the death penalty for it. Who is Germaine Greer? Sounds like a real mean guy.

She was abig feminist back in the 70's I think now the feminist movement has moved on without her and does stuff like celebrety big brother and I'm a celebrety get me out of here. My point was that if a women had died doing this Ms Greer would not be so condemming.

The truht is what does she know about Steve Irwin and his expertise with animals probabaly about as much as he knew about feminists.

Well the whole deal reminds me of that guy, Timothy something, that lived up there with the bears, and then one killed him.

I thought the guy was a royal idiot for being around those bears like that, and when I first heard about it, I was like dude got what was coming to him.

But after watching the documentary on the bears and his life and stuff, I still thought he was nuts, but I was sad he got killed. I feel the same way about Irwin, seemed like a nice enough guy, I thought his style with the animals was to sensational, as he would put his face down in the face of some poison snake and back up just in time.

I think he was like the Bear guy, absolutely loved animals, and wanted to have a life that involved them. He just used poor judgment when it came to personal safety and the safety of his kid.

At least Irwin had some training. The bear guy was some dingus who lived with bears and talked to them in little kid voices, named them and was eaten.

Australia lost another great Aussie on Friday afternoon. Peter Brock, racing car champion (9 times winner of the famous Bathurst 1000; like a Aussie version of the Indy 500 over in the states, except windier and in V8s) crashed into a tree during a rally.

Widow: 'Croc Hunter' thought he'd die young

POSTED: 10:20 a.m. EDT, September 27, 2006

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin always felt he would die early, but that he would be killed in a car wreck and not by an animal, his widow says.

In an interview with Australia's Nine Network that aired Wednesday, Terri Irwin said her husband, who died from the jab of a stingray September 4, had an uncanny way with animals that both of them believed would keep him safe as he caught crocodiles, snatched up snakes and played with other dangerous beasts.

"I never thought it would be an animal, he never thought it would be an animal," Irwin said. "I thought he would fall out of a tree, he thought it would be a car accident."

Asked by interviewer Ray Martin if Irwin believed he would die early, Terri Irwin said, "He had a very strong conviction that he would. To the point where I'm grateful in a way, because we're prepared."

Irwin, 44, died minutes after a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he filmed a TV show on the Great Barrier Reef. His death prompted an unprecedented outpouring of grief in Australia and among millions of fans of his TV show, "Crocodile Hunter."

In an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters that was to air Wednesday in the United States, Irwin she said she hasn't seen the film of her husband's deadly encounter with the stingray and that it won't ever be shown on television.

"What purpose would that serve?" the American-born Irwin said. Excerpts of the interview were released in advance by ABC.

Irwin's friend and business partner, John Stainton, has seen the film. He told Walters he never wants to see it again and doesn't want anyone else to see it. "It's just a horrible piece of film tape," he said.

Terri Irwin was on a research trip in Australia with the couple's two children -- 8-year-old daughter Bindi and 2-year-old son Bob -- when her brother-in-law reached her with the news.

"I remember thinking, 'Don't say it. Don't say it. Don't say it,"' she said. "I looked out the window, and Bindi was skipping, skipping along outside the window. And I thought, 'Oh, my children. He wouldn't have wanted to leave the children.' And I knew it was an accident. It was an accident so stupid. It was like running with a pencil."

She said it's important for her family to continue the work her husband did in teaching the world about wildlife.

Irwin told Walters she is getting through her grief "one minute at a time," and said it was important for her family to continue the work her husband did in teaching the world about wildlife.

"I've always told Bindi, 'If anything ever happened to me, I will always watch over you from heaven,"' she said. "But she always understood because living at a zoo, animals die, she's seen death. She knows what death is."

She said her son Bob recently took a screwdriver out of the drawer and said he was going to fix the family's motorbike.

"Off he goes, very carefully carrying it like it was a lit candle," she said. "Goes up to the motorbike and starts poking at it. I said, 'What are you doing to the motorbike?' He said, 'I'm fixing the motorbike so daddy can drive it from heaven.' "
