How do you feel about getting on an airplane in wake of the spoiled airline bomb thre |
| Posted by: Kerry02 | | I personally have cancelled plans to fly to my home town on August 19. I'm checking to see if Greyhound goes anyway near where I need to go. No airplanes for me. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: lodgebo | | Well I was meant to get on a plane to London yesterday but I am not scared of flying. If anything the way the security services reacted and cuaght these guys has made me feel safer, proves they have their finger on the button. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: P.O.T.U.S. | | I will readily fly whenever I'm called to do so and I don't give it a second thought. I will always fly British into Heathrow and Jetblue domestically. My chances are better that I will be struck by lightning than be blown up by Islamofascists. And i don't much concern myself with when and where lightning will strike. When nerves fail, try employing the brain to think in common sense terms. | | Reply To this Message

My aren't we smug about our intellect? Excuse me, but I do have common sense. Which tells me to avoid risks when possible. And please don't tell me I should be willing to take risks. I'm willing to take the ones that don't offend my common sense.

I was just quoting a simple fact. No where did i point you or any one else in inreview out. No i'm not smug about my intellect and i normally do not speak of what my iq is, my friends don't even know what it is.
Anyways, i was just stating that the general public, in fact, does not have commonsense. A simple observation that i'm sure you've concluded as well. I concluded this after about 10 years of observation.
Example -
when i worked for a help desk group i spoke to an high offical at FORD motor company. she had no power to her computer. after talking with her for about 4-5 minutes, she told me the power in her entire house was out...because i was going to have her attempt a different outlet, bypassing the surge prot she was using. was a desktop, no battery backup - what an idiot. commonsense would tell her that no power = no power to anything. but she thought, insisted, and argued that all computers, printers, and scanners ran off rechargable batteries. she told me who she was in the business and as thus, she couldn't be incorrect. and she was way up there. computer told us who was who as well.
i've told the following story before: the full story was posted here a few years back -
I spoke to a delta airline pilot when i did vpn support for them - this guy made about 200,000 a year. He was eating pringles and wanted to know "why" his screen was inverted upsidedown.
came to find out that he thought the hollow base on his monitor stand was a "chip bowl" and he installed the monitor upside and dumped his pringles in it before turning the computer on.
idiot. and this guy is a pilot and our hope of life while in the air is in his hands. I would be afraid to fly for this reason, not because a terrorist pisses in a bottle and tries to take it on the plane.
I will not live my life through paranoid means and constant fear. that's both ignoramic and asinine. If you feel its necessary to run through life afraid to fly, go for it. We all die. its just a matter of how and when. You can't stop death so why worry about it constantly. Stress only brings death that much faster
I prefer not to fly any how - i love driving the scenic routes through the mountains and often stop at land marks to see what sights they may have.
I now work at the zoo as a keeper - big "keep out" signs are on the employee service roads posted here and there. I had to run and catch a lady and her 3 kids that were on the way to the dump site in the back. FAR back. she read the signs, and thought - lacking commonsense and being a general public figure - that keep out was kids only. how the hell you come up with that? Sign is about 4 feet by 3 feet - clearly says " keep out, no public entry" not "keep out kids, adult is find and children with adults may enter."
In the childrens zoo one day. this man, probably in his late 30s, told his son that the goats were donkeys and the sheep were lamas. i corrected him and he started yelling at me about telling him that he was wrong in front of his son... and that he was not wrong. i had told him that these were nigerian dwarf goats, and the sheep were babydoll southdown sheep. I gave him the full name rather then just goat and sheep. When i pointed out the lamas down the road, he said - those aren't lamas, anyone with commonsense can tell they are donkeys. i was like wtf? its a lama. looks like a lama. smells like a lama. spits like a lama. and says "LAMA" on the sign. and you just said the goats were donkeys. donkeys are on the other side of the park
anyways, i had to call security to remove him. he started cussing out one of the female keepers who joined my side.
When i was at the cable company - people would call up and ask how to turn the tv on, why they had to pay a bill etc.. same thing when i did tech for dtv. I've even spoke with actors. when i worked for dtv i spoke with keanu reeves, who wanted to know why he had "searching for sat" message. it was pouring down rain outside - really bad. I was tempted to tell him his acting sucked because he acts the same in every movie.
i spoke with george lucas when he was on his yaught. his was a little more difficult. 2 sats, one side worked the other didn't. he came to the conclusion that he was at a barrior line where the signal cuts off. which was correct. he called to ask where the signal cut off. backed the boat up and all was fine. smart man compared to mr. speed.
I've had people ask me why they needed to pay their bill - how to turn on the tv - where to plug the power cable - what a power button is - what 325 + 25 was for billing purposes (can't remember the actual numbers but that's close enough). I've even had people call and ask what their address and phone number is BECAUSE they weren't at home to look it up. Account said they had lived there for about 8 months. wth?
I was at the store one day and some lady was arguing with a man about osake not being rice wine but was actually fermented cheese that was liquified. And that bud light was burnt something or other.
I argued with a women one day that insisted that one of our "male" animals was pregnant and she knew more about it because she used to raise them. i pointed out the fact that the animal was clearly male. you could see its member hanging down. She insisted that it was a strange growth of some sort that needed to be removed by the vet and wanted to know the moment the baby was born. i walked away.
Now, i'm sorry, but after dealing with and seeing the actions of 500,000+ people, i've concluded that - the general public has no commonsense. if you have something that can prove all these observations incorrect, post it.
If you want to place yourself in the same box as the general public, that's your standard not mine.
FYI, tiger woods has DTV and spends anywhere from 2000 - 5000 dollars a month on porno. guess him and his wife are voyeurs.
i have many more stories - like people at college including those that claim to have a phd and attempt to teach, and they couldn't teach a 10 year how to pee behind a tree.
Do i not perform stupid activities? of course i do, just for the hell of it. but not as dumb as these people i have mentioned.
I have many more. no offense to canda, but they are REALLY bad about it I should know. in 5 years i dealt with over 40,000 canadians. More americans. all in all it was close to 180,000 - 190,000 people. Even spoke to a few from over seas.
This number does not include the combined years of tech support at dtv, cable, or the thousands at the zoo this year.
we counted how many people came through the children zoo - seems the average is between 500-2000 a day. depending on how hot and if there are ay special groups.
some days it is literally just a couple people. One day it was about 15 people in 6 hours. don't blame em. was 117 degrees. i would not have been there if i didn't need the money.

I would say getting struck by lighting 100 times before getting blown up on a plane.

| Posted by: P.O.T.U.S. | | Odds of being struck by lightning in a given year in the U.S. (reported deaths + injuries): 1 in 700,000.
U.S. Census 2000.
Estimated odds of being blown to bits by Islamofascists in a given year: About 1 in 1,000,000.

| Posted by: mystic | | I hate to fly....I havent flown in years.
This is just another reason to keep me from ever doing so again.
And no, I have no desire to fly out of the country.
And with that said...if I want to go somewhere in the country, then I drive. (Ive taken the train...but Ive noticed the security sucks)...so if I have to go somewhere, Ill pay that gazillion dollars for gas and drive myself.
Yeah, yeah, I know, its safer to fly than drive...but when I drive, I have control, and if an accident occurs, I have a chance to survive and I wont be falling 50,000 feet from the sky onto the ground. | | Reply To this Message

Maybe you'll bounce 7 times like that skydiver did and live.
he bounced 7-8 times when his parachute didn't open. broke something like 100 bones but he lived.

| Posted by: Kerry02 | | ?Dreams walker I still say you have enormous contempt for your fellow man. Think about some of the dumb things you have done out of just not knowing any better. We've all done it. Even you. And we've all had to deal with people who were sure they were right and everybody else was wrong. That does not mean the majority of people are without common sense most of the time. Give your fellow human beings a break. | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Kerry02 | | Yeah, I've rethought my position about flying. I still don't feel all warm and fuzzy about it, but everyone said do it. I'm only going from Arizona to Illinois. Who would bother to bomb people traveling to such boring destinations. And whomever it was that told me that Grayhound really sucks is right. It costs $100 more to go on that sleazy bus that to fly. Also it takes something like 33 hours and I have to change buses three times. So I'll be taking off to the wild blue yonder come Saturday morning. See you in two weeks | | Reply To this Message
