MALIBU, Calif. - Mel Gibson was arrested early Friday for suspicion of driving under the influence, a Sheriff's Department spokesman said.
Gibson's vehicle was speeding eastbound on the Pacific Coast Highway when officers stopped him at 2:36 a.m., Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
Gibson, 50, was booked at the Lost Hills Sheriff's station at 4:06 a.m., according to department records. The actor-director was cited and released, Whitmore said. Bail was set at $5,000.
"The investigation is ongoing," Whitmore said. "As we would do with anyone, we don't want to release any more since the information is fragmentary."
Gibson's spokesman, Alan Nierob, said he was looking into the matter.
Gibson won a best-director Oscar for 1995's "Braveheart."
Like his 2004 religious blockbuster, "The Passion of the Christ," which was shot in Aramaic and Latin, his new film, "Apocalypto," was done in an ancient tongue, Yucatec Maya.
Gibson has starred in the "Lethal Weapon" and "Mad Max" films, "What Women Want" and "The Man Without a Face," among other movies.

Mel Gibson
Actor Mel Gibson released a contrite statement through his publicist Saturday regarding his DUI arrest in Malibu early Friday morning.
“After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed," the statement read. "(After) I was stopped by the L.A. County Sheriffs ... I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologize to anyone who I have offended."
He added in the statement, "I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."
Hollywood gossip website TMZ.com posted four pages of what it alleges are copies of the police report, which details the Oscar winner screaming profanities and anti-Semitic slurs at authorities after being pulled over for speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway on Friday.
Weekend-duty sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Hocking would not confirm that the police report posted on TMZ was legitimate. He also had no comment on allegations by the Web site of a cover-up, since on Friday sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said that Gibson was "arrested without incident."
"Our investigation has not gotten that far, but we're trying to put out the facts regarding the case. It's still being determined what actually occurred," Hocking tells PEOPLE. | | Reply To this Message

I really hope that is just Hollywood gossip. If true, then to me, it's worse than the drunk driving. I know his dad is a strong anti semite, but I had thought that Mel was beyond all that and had fallen far from the tree.
Oh well, it's from a gossip website, so I do hope that it's bogus. To me the drunk driving thing is stupid, but I don't hate him for it. But if he really is a Jew hater, then I would have to sign off on him. Which would suck, as Braveheart is one of my favorite movies.

BY MICHELLE CARUSO
DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
LOS ANGELES - A day after being busted for drunken driving, Mel Gibson apologized yesterday for getting behind the wheel while "inebriated" and said he was "deeply ashamed" of the "despicable" things he said in an abusive rant to cops.
The Oscar-winning star and director of "Braveheart" said he had suffered a "horrific relapse" in a decades-long battle with alcoholism.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," Gibson said in a statement. "I am deeply ashamed of everything I said."
The 50-year-old actor didn't get more specific about his tirade to the L.A. County sheriff's deputies who stopped him on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu early Friday.
The sheriff's department has refused to release either Gibson's mug shot or the report of the arresting officer, Deputy James Mee. But celebrity news Web site TMZ.com obtained several pages of Mee's report and published explosive details.
According to Mee's report, Gibson berated and threatened the deputy, saying, "You motherf-----. I'm going to f--- you."
"The Passion of the Christ" director also made anti-Semitic remarks. "F------ Jews. Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," Mee's report quotes Gibson as saying.
The "Braveheart" star offered a public apology yesterday to Mee, who "was just doing his job."
"I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to another person," Gibson said in his statement.
Cops said Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 when he was pulled over for speeding. The legal limit in California is 0.08.
The Aussie-raised actor said he had battled alcoholism "all of my adult life." He said he had "already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health," but he did not elaborate.
Police officials, meanwhile, denied they purposely covered up the star's tirade.
"There was no favoritism. There was no sanitization. A complete report of everything that occurred will be turned over to the district attorney," said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Lets face it, if someone said this, even in the event of being drunk, its usually a sign that they really feel this way. Why else would someone just say that out of the blue like he did.
How pathetic.

| Posted by: Whidden | | Mel Gibson Anti-Semitic Rant Confirmed
Official Report Shows Actor Spewed Epithets During Arrest
(Page 1 of 2)
LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2006
(AP) An official police report on Mel Gibson's arrest on drunken driving charges substantiates claims that he made anti-Semitic remarks and threatened a deputy, a law enforcement official said Monday.
On Monday, Sheriff's Department officials sent prosecutors their case, which also says a tequila bottle was found in Gibson's car when he was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway.
Gibson had released a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for saying "despicable" things to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested, but he did not elaborate. The entertainment Web site TMZ.com had reported that the sheriff's department was considering eliminating the anti-Semitic remarks from its official report.
The report forwarded to prosecutors cites Gibson as making disparaging comments about Jews, according to the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
TMZ reported that Gibson said, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and asked the arresting officer, "Are you a Jew?"
The district attorney's office confirmed prosecutors had received the case and it was under review. A tentative arraignment date was set for Sept. 28.
On Monday, a sheriff's spokesman defended the department's handling of the case.
"In that case file will be (Gibson's) statement, will be our report, will be everything pertinent to his blood-alcohol level. We have done our job," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told reporters Monday at department headquarters. "We hope we've done it with not only professionalism and intelligence, but held to the highest standard of legal and moral imperative."
The department, he said, was "convinced because of our investigation and because of his own self-illuminating statement that he will be convicted of driving under the influence."
In his statement, Gibson said he has struggled with alcoholism and taken steps "to ensure my return to health."
The actor was "participating in an ongoing program to deal with this," Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob told The Associated Press on Monday. "The guy is trying to stay alive."
The questions about whether police were covering up Gibson's remarks came partly because Gibson has a relationship with Sheriff Lee Baca. He has dressed in a sheriff's uniform to film public service announcements for Baca's Star Organization, a charity group that raises scholarships for children of department employees. Gibson also donated $10,000, Whitmore said.
AP) Gibson was arrested after deputies stopped his 2006 Lexus LS 430 for speeding at 2:36 a.m. Friday. Whitmore said deputies clocked him doing 87 mph in a 45 mph zone.
A breath test indicated Gibson's blood-alcohol level was 0.12 percent, Whitmore said. In California, a driver is legally intoxicated at 0.08 percent.
Gibson posted $5,000 bail and was released hours later.
Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, called Gibson's apology "unremorseful and insufficient." Prominent Hollywood talent agent Ari Emanuel called for an industry boycott of Gibson in a blog posted Monday.
"At a time of escalating tensions in the world, the entertainment industry cannot idly stand by and allow Mel Gibson to get away with such tragically inflammatory statements," he wrote. "People in the entertainment community, whether Jew or gentile, need to demonstrate that they understand how much is at stake in this by professionally shunning Mel Gibson and refusing to work with him, even if it means a sacrifice to their bottom line.
"There are times in history when standing up against bigotry and racism is more important than money."
This is not the first time Gibson has faced accusations of anti-Semitism. Gibson produced, directed and financed "The Passion of the Christ," which some Jewish leaders said cast Jews as the killers of Jesus. Days before "Passion" was released, Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, was quoted as saying the Holocaust was mostly "fiction."
Gibson, 50, won a best-director Oscar for 1995's "Braveheart," and starred in the "Lethal Weapon" and "Mad Max" films, among others.
In recent years, he has turned his attention to producing films and TV shows through his Icon Productions. The hundreds of millions of dollars he made producing the 2004 film "The Passion of the Christ" has given the star the ability to finance his own films, giving him a measure of independence from the major studios.
His next movie is "Apocalypto," about the decline of the Mayan empire. It is being distributed by The Walt Disney Co. | | Reply To this Message

Sure, sometimes people do get loose lips and spill the beans on a secret or two.
Also, let's say he had a lingering, marginal dislike of Jews. I've seen alcohol fuel things like that and escalate.

After his drunken-driving arrest over the weekend and worldwide outcry over his alleged anti-Semitic remarks to police, actor-director Mel Gibson has checked himself into an unnamed substance abuse treatment center. His spokesman Alan Nierob told the Star magazine, "He is in a program of recovery at this time."
But Gibson's neighbor Chris Prentiss, a co-founder of the celebrity treatment center Passages in Malibu, Calif., told the Star he was disappointed Gibson chose a different clinic in which to seek treatment.
According to Prentiss, Gibson has gone to an "Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program. I don't believe that will help him. He needs individual, intense therapy by a team who knows what it is looking for in causes of alcoholism."

Actually, you just are arrested then spend the night in jail until you sober up. If you have a lawyer they can speed the process and get you out right away.
Gibson will pay far more in the court of public opinion. He's already losing work. Not that it will hurt his pocket book, but still.

why? because he calls himself a Christian, and if he is then he would not feel that way. If he does hate Jews, then he does not read his Bible or understand it. His statements have tainted the Passion for some people, not me, but there will be those that view it as being something other than what it was.

Will we want to see Mel Gibson's next movie?
Reaction continues to Mel Gibson's anti-Jewish outburst when arrested for drink driving ...
The actor and director's latest statement is a direct apology to the Jewish community for his comments.
"There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark," Gibson said through his publicist (as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter). "I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge."
Gibson also referred to his Christian faith.
"Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honour my God I have to honour his
children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.
"I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing."
Even allowing for his publicist's involvement, Gibson sounds genuinely apologetic about his indefensible comments.
"This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have," he said. "It's about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad."
While there have been mixed reactions from Jewish representatives, the Anti-Defamation League has accepted the apology and Gibson's request for help from the Jewish community.
There are many issues raised by the incident. The one we'll focus on here - after a couple of days of anger and dismay about such an inflammatory outburst, especially during war in the Middle East - is how Gibson's actions have affected our perceptions of his movies.
The action-adventure-drama Apocalypto, directed by Gibson and set during the decline of the Mayan civilisation, is due to reach cinemas in December.
He has won best director at the Oscars for Braveheart - something Martin Scorsese, Peter Weir and many other legendary film-makers have never managed. And The Passion of the Christ remains the 10th highest-grossing movie in American cinema history - the only sub-titled release in the top 200. With that sort of track record, a lot of people will want to see Apocalypto.
But has Gibson's drunken outburst poisoned the well? After all, Tom Cruise's antics, including his public support for Scientology, clearly affected box office for Mission: Impossible 3 recently. (Just look at the response to the blog on that very issue.)
It's likely some people will never see a Mel Gibson movie the same way. They will see him exposed as a bigot despite what he is now saying. Others will think he's clearly a man with a problem and, given his genuine remorse, we should aim for forgiveness, hope that such a talented actor-film-maker recovers while addressing any issues he has and just treat the movie on its merits.
I imagine his publicists will be encouraging more gestures of contrition, including a heart-to-heart TV interview, sympathetic photo opportunities and a handsome donation to a Jewish charity.
It's about a lot more than just a movie, of course, but how much will the issue affect Apocalypto? That's a challenge for the distributors over the next few months. |

I don't really believe he is a devout Christain as he says. I believe that he made the Passion of Christ for money and nothing else. I never liked Mel Gibson anyway and his comments on Jews starting wars is just bull****. I myself am part Jewish, my mother being Jewish and my father being a Lutheran. I laughed at his stupid comments, not being offended at all. Mel is just a typical arrogant Hollywood producer, making money off of religion. Devout Christains do not sleep around with other women while he is married or drinks to get drunk. He's a hypocrite.

| Posted by: Whidden | | LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Several of Mel Gibson's friends say he's a "different person" when he's drinking, but they do not believe he's anti-Semitic.
Movie producer Dean Devlin said he and his wife are Jewish, and he considers Gibson -- who unleashed an anti-Jewish tirade when arrested for drunken driving July 28 -- one of his best friends in Hollywood.
"If Mel is an anti-Semite, then he spends a lot of time with us, which makes no sense," Devlin told the Los Angeles Times. He met Gibson while co-producing "The Patriot," in which Gibson starred. "But he is an alcoholic, and while that makes no excuse for what he said, because there is no excuse, I believe it was the disease speaking, not the man."
Jodie Foster said she does not believe that drunkenness excuses hurtful remarks, but doubts claims that Gibson is prejudiced against Jews.
"Is he an anti-Semite? Absolutely not," Foster told the newspaper for a story in Friday's editions. "But it's no secret that he has always fought a terrible battle with alcoholism."
Though it was widely believed that Gibson has been sober since the early '90s, some people close to him say he has been on and off the wagon for years.
"I have been with Mel when he has fallen off, and he becomes a completely different person," Devlin said. "It is pretty horrifying."
Gibson was charged this week with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Foster, who co-starred with Gibson in "Maverick," said she believed he will recover from his latest fall.
Gibson "was a shining example of how low you can go when you are young and still pull yourself up," she said. "He took his recovery very seriously, which is why I know he is strong enough to get through this now." | | Reply To this Message

| Posted by: Whidden | | Patrick Swayze Defends Mel Gibson
By Doug Pendrell
Monday, August 7, 2006
Despite the public backlash over the anti-Semitic remarks made during his DUI arrest, Mel Gibson has been receiving some public support as well. Most recently, Patrick Swayze has backed the embattled Mad Max star, publicly offering his support through this tough time.
Patrick Swayze was interviewed by London's GMTV over the weekend, in which he described Mel Gibson as "a wonderful human being". The interview, which will go to air tonight, adds Swayze's voice to a list of Gibson supporters which also includes Jodie Foster and producer Dean Devlin.
ITV quoted most of Swayze's interview, in which he said "I feel really bad for Mel, he's a good guy, we have been in each other's lives for a long time, he's a wonderful human being. He is not anti-Semitic. People say stupid things when they happen to have a few and especially if you don't drink any more, or have limited your drinking for a long time and all of a sudden you decide to have one too many with the boys - you are stupid."
Swayze, who has battled alcohol problems of his own in the past, went on to say "I really feel for him right now because for one moment in time ... everybody else gets to be allowed to have a stupid moment and nobody knows about it or cares the next day. So it makes it difficult when your life is under the microscope."
As well as downplaying the magnitude of the arrest, and of the anti-Semitic remarks, Swayze talked about how the arrest could affect Mel's career. When asked if this arrest could end Mel Gibson's career, Patrick Swayze said "No way - are you kidding me? A man that talented? You don't put somebody down like that, you can try - they've tried in my world. When you are a pitbull and you love what you do and you are going to continue to grow, that talent will find its way out one or the other."
"If anybody dares try to pull this cr*p of messing with Mel's career - it's wrong, it's unfair, it's not right. Talent deserves to be honoured, hands deserve to be slapped if you do something stupid as well, but don't take it too far."
Mel Gibson was pulled over and arrested on the Pacific Coast Highway on Friday, July 28. During his arrest, Gibson was quoted as saying "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," before asking the arresting deputy if he was a Jew. While more remarks were made, and unconfirmed comments cast an even larger shadow over Gibson, the tape of the arrest will not be made public.
Patrick Swayze has been a veteran actor in Hollywood, appearing in dozens of films. As well as being an actor, who has appeared in movies such as The Outsiders, Youngblood, Dirty Dancing, Road House, Ghost, Point Break, To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar and Donnie Darko, Swayze is now on stage in London's West End, portraying Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls.
As for Mel Gibson, the embattled director of Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, as well as the star of The Patriot, Lethal Weapon, Mad Max and many other films, is set to appear in court to face DUI charges on September 28th.
