I simply cannot believe our president is refusing to add his voice to the sane world in asking Israel and Hezbollah to step back and try to strike some kind of peace. Yes, we all know that the Middle East is littered with peace agreements that have gone awry for one reason or another. But it seems obvious that it's better to have both sides stop firing at each other even if neither side believes the peace can last. Doesn't it buy time to stop the killing even for a little while to let saner heads work on something more lasting? In all Bush's years in the mishandling of affairs in the world, this one is the most boneheaded. I believe this move is going to kill the Republican party in the next election. And I don't particularly care about that, but I think he's done irrepairable damage not only to the parties involved but to his own party and certainly to the rest of the sane world. This man still has two years to go on his term. I hope he doesn't manage to bring down the USA before he's done.

Screw Hezbollah. They started this. Let Israel finish it.

I'm in agreement with you that Hezbollah started this and I have no doubt that Israel can finish it in grand style. We all know what fierce fighters they are, but innocent people are dying right and left. There's no way to justify that by not doing everything you can - especially if you are in a position of extreme power like President Bush is - to stop the killing even temporarily. I would like to know what the real reason is that Bush doesn't want to see it end. What's in it for him? I don't believe Bush is smart enough to come up with any reasonable plan. But somebody in his acquaintance is. I wonder who it is and what their agenda is? Back in the 80's there was an opinion by lots of people that the President (whoever he might be at any given time) had no real power of his own. He was just the puppet of (at that time)
something called the Tri-lateral Commission. I'm not even sure who or what that is or if it still exists today.

Don't say Bush isn't doing anything. Where do you think Israel is getting some of those pretty rockets from

I stand corrected. Of course, the USA is providing "pretty rockets" to Israel. Just as Iran and Syria are providing them to Hezbollah.

I reckon Bush and Blair see this conflict as a great opportunity to make amends for the disaster they started in Iraq, and make a "new Middle East". They know if they support Israel enough and allow them to continue the destruction in Lebanon it will drives Arabs around the world mad, forcing either Syria and Iran to take som action - thus giving the US the opportunity to spread the chaos into other countries they hate. And I'm sure they believe out of this chaos they will get the "new Middle East".

Says who?

Is the fact that Israeli soldiers can and do cross over borders and kidanp whoever they chose with impunity irrelevant? You think the destruction of Gaza and Lebanon started because Hezbollah and Hamas captured some soldiers and asked the Israelis to do a prisoners swap?

The big suspicion is this is all about Israel and the US wanting to humiliate Iran and Syria. It's pathetic brinkmanship and if they push it too far they'll probably get what they want - even more horrendous violence and death and destruction in the Middle East.

What's going on is shameful.
