Author JK Rowling has said two characters will die in the seventh and final Harry Potter book, but she has been careful not to reveal which ones.

She told the Richard and Judy show that she had long known how the series would end, because she had written the last chapter "in something like 1990".

"One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said.

She refused to elaborate, as "I don't want the hate mail or anything else".

Rowling said she could understand why authors might want to finish off their main characters in order to ensure they could never be resurrected.

She would not say if this would be the case with Harry.

However, she admitted she had "never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books".

This approach had meant she had been "lambasted" by several people, she said.

"I think they thought it was very arrogant of me to write the end of my seven books series when I didn't have a publisher and no-one had heard of me."

The author also told the Channel 4 programme she didn't expect to create a character more successful than the teenage wizard.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

On Sunday, Rowling attended the Queen's 80th birthday party at Buckingham Palace, and said she was "doing well" with the final book.

However, she did not confirm a publication date.

Very interesting article.

Okay... we know that either Voldie or Harry must die in the end, for the other to live. So, I don't think that she meant it would have been either of them. There are two other people... who she didn't intend to die, yet will. Now, that's not saying that it isn't a "bad" character... but, it isn't saying that they aren't "good" ones either.

WHO could it be... and for what purpose? Could it be Ron or Hermione? Will one of them WILLINGLY sacrifice their life, so that Harry can do what needs to be done?

Im sure they could be willing to risk there life ... if its as a direct attempt to save Harry ... just look at the veil room from the MoM ... infact it could be any of either the order or the DA, from the good side ...

Rowling: Two shall die in final Potter book

J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

“I can completely understand the mentality of an author who thinks, ‘Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character.'”

Rowling wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book.

“The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die,” she said. “A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do.”

I heard some other parts of this interview, and she said something about how once she's dead, she doesn't want to have left the series open for someone else to petition for the rights to continue the series. Many are saying that there is a huge chance that Harry will die, to finalize the series. IF he dies, and Voldie doesn't.... there will be a lot of HP book burnings, I have a feeling.

If she kills off Harry, people will hate her. She will not get any new readers to the series either if it happens.

I think that Bill got the reprieve and that we will see Lupin die as well as either Draco or Wormtail.

He's talking about Ron...

Dave, you think that Ron AND Hermione are going to die in book seven?
BOTH of Harry's best friends?

Bob, good thought... and anything is possible. I believe that one of the deaths will be Voldemort, because if he doesn't die, there will be MILLIONS of people that are beyond pissed. They will feel somewhat betrayed.

I would be unhappy if Voldemort was alive after all this, but I wouldn't want Rowling to write something just because it's what her fans want. It's her world, and she needs to be the one who controls it.

That said, I will be pissed off if Voldie lives And if both Harry and Voldemort die, I'll be very angry if Harry dies first for whatever reason.

IF she sends Harry "into the veil" to be with Sirius, then she will be accused of ripping off LOTR. She has to tread very carefully or all her hard work in the series could be ruined.

Was that in the films Fuscia? because i dont remember seeing anything about somone following somone into a veil in LOTR ...

I think the two people to die in the Final book will be Peter Pettigrew and Voldemort.

Going into the veil is like Frodo going to the havens with Gandalf =forever beyond the reach of his friends, yet with someone he cares about.

You cant really patent an idea like that now can you ... just look at the case between the da vinci code and Holy blood holy grail

You can't patent the idea, but you can be called a rip off. JKR needs to be careful to make this her own and have it not compared to the greats like Tolkien that way.

Many ideas have been used in film in the passed, it would be hard to find an idea that nobody has used before ... and theres proberly a reason why it hadnt been used ...

I found this online at EW, thought we might like it.

Death odds for Hogwarts denizens:

WEASLEY KIDS
Offing Harry's best mate Ron would be dramatic. But more likely to meet her maker is his sister Ginny, whom Voldemort tried to murder in book 2.
RON ODDS: 20-1; GINNY ODDS: 6-1

HAGRID
The gentle half-giant is Harry's last adult ally. Sadly, this spells doom.
ODDS: 3-2

HERMIONE
Rowling has said she sees herself in the brainy gal. Killing the strongest young female would send a wicked message, indeed.
ODDS: 50-1

SNAPE
Harry is convinced he's on Voldy's side, but Dumbledore defended him until the end. Expect the prickly professor to die a martyr fighting the Dark Lord.
ODDS: 2-1

HARRY
Voldy won't quit until The Boy Who Lived is no more, so their ultimate face-off will be apocalyptic. But ending the series with the death of the hero? Beyond shocking.
ODDS: 9-2

VOLDEMORT
Goodbye, Mr. Big Bad.
ODDS: Even

If she kills of Harry, then she will never get any piece from her fans. She will become "the lady who killed Harry Potter". I know I would never kill of such a major character like that. You just don't kill orphans.

In reading Philosopher's Stone, I read a bit that makes me think that Harry IS going to die.

"Good luck, Harry Potter," said Firenze. "The planets have been read wrongly before now, even by centaurs. I hope this is one of those times."

If he is really going out, you know he's gonna go out swinging. It'll be a great finale. Like he takes out Voldemort, Bellatrix, the Malfoys, and half the other Death Eaters before he's finally brought down.

Interesting, but he could've just been talking about Harry's current adventure, and not the whole series.

At least I hope so

He could have been talking about the upcoming war. IF she kills off Harry, people will hate her and hate the series. It would taint the series. I think Harry will live.

JKR wouldn't be hurt, financially, if she killed off Harry. But, I just don't see her doing it. She doesn't want the WORLD to hate her... and many would. She might lead us to believe that he is going to die... but, in the end, I believe that Harry will be very much alive.

Reply To this Message

Maybe Harry will come out of it different, but he will live. He is the boy who lived after all. Like she is going to make him "the boy who died".

Yeah, how could she go from one to the other? It just wouldn't be right.

Are you talking about the next movie or book 7 movie? If your talking about the next movie what will come first? the movie or the book.

If your talking about book 7 movie then how can you be sure that they will make the 7th movie if she kills harry off?
Reply To this Message

He's asking if she kills Harry in book 7, will you still see the 7th movie. Her killing Harry won't kill the movie... loss of interest might, but that won't happen.

She might kill off Harry, but I think she's developed his character so far that she might feel kinda disappointed to see her creation down the drain. But then, she's never seemed to care what the public think, just gone with whatever she wants, so I don't think it'd worry her too much if she wanted to kill him, but it is a very big thing. Iunno

But I'm almost entirely certain (anythings possible, but I doubt it on this one) that Voldie's going to die. I mean, it's not going to be both of them surviving, because one has to die at least, but can you imagine Harry dying and not Voldie? I mean, forget the fact that the fans will go mad, what about the wizarding world? It'd be kinda doomed .

If she kills off Ron or Hermione, I'll be very very mad :@. A world without Ron and Hermione would be a lot less funny. And just as they're getting together? It's taken them 7 years! They can't die now!

I hope I have made my sentiments known on this matter

Hold on... I seem to remember her hinting that he'd survive, but he won't be in once piece... I forget how it went exactly, but does anyone else remember her saying something like that?

I know this is from earlier in the thread, but I think the two characters to die will be Voldemort and Snape.

And yes, I am revived! Again! For the summer, at least. Last semester got crazy just like last fall did. But it's all over now. I've got a bit of time on my hands and I thought I'd come back to see what interesting conversations were going on in preparation for the release of the last book. But I come back and find out there hasn't been a Harry Potter post in over a month. Poo.
