Ever wonder why it's so cold in Canada?

Is the Canadian moose symbolic of Canada?

Who makes the best maple syrup?

What's a "loonie" or a "toonie"?

What are the lyrics of the Canadian National Anthem?

Answers to those and other baffling Canadian trivia can be asked here in this thread I started for fun and amusement.

So go ahead, don't hold back folks. I know there is something you've always wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

GO AHEAD....post it and we (your Canadian friends will reply...)

Why do your quarters suck so bad? They mess up our soda machines.

Does France still own you?

Do you get polar bears in Canada? Or is it too far south?

Do you ever ever feel remorse for releasing Micheal J. Fox onto us?

What did you think of the movie, STRANGE BREW ?

Does France still own you? Nope. Do you mean the British? They did own us at one time..

Do you get polar bears in Canada? Or is it too far south?Yeah, we got the Polar bears in Arctic. We OWN the Arctic. We sent some down south to work for Coca-Cola as mascots. A few stray ones went to some undisclosed island in the south.

Do you ever ever feel remorse for releasing Micheal J. Fox onto us? Not at all. Micheal J. Fox is our gift to you. We are proud of him.

That movie was hilarious. Drink more Canadian beer and eat more Canadian bacon.

World Geograpy aint my strong suit. I thought the French owned you, and you all split off. I got some wires crossed or something.

So, how come that one section over there, Quebec, wants to speak French and break off from the rest of y'all?

France sent a bunch of settlers in the 17th century or so, but we became dominated by the British. Champlain's founding of Quebec City in 1608 it became the capital of New France. While the coastal communities were based upon the cod fishery, the economy of the interior revolved around beaver fur which was the rage in Europe. French voyageurs would travel into the hinterlands and trade with the natives. The voyageurs ranged throughout what is today Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba trading guns, gun powder, textiles and other European manufacturing goods with the natives for furs. The fur trade only encouraged a small population, however, as minimal labour was required. Encouraging settlement was always difficult, and while some immigration did occur, by 1759 New France only had a population of some 60,000. So I guess technically they were here first but got outrun by the British. As for the language, to preserve that heritage they speak French in the province of Quebec, and we are a bilingual country. Britain mainly had more control over ther 13 colonies.Britain went to war with the French and won. Just to make a long story short....(heehee). I'm not a history expert either, but I hope that answers some your questions. Um, you know when I go to the States, everything is in English & Spanish but I don't think the US recognizes Spanish as an "official language" or is it? Due to the history of the settlers and the preservation of that is why French is spoken in Canada.

** disclaimer: I am not a historian, but I do play one on the internet sometimes.

The eastern part of Canada was owned by France, but by the time white folk got over to the west the English owned it. That's why east Canada, or French Canada, speaks French as their dominant language and English as their second, while West Canada is the other way around.

Oh, and Quebec wanted to break away from Canada because they felt they were "special" francophones with a unique and distinct history. I personally voted "NON" to that issue when it came up in the referendum. Perhaps some French Canadian on INR can better explain that one.

They're not going to leave us anytime soon in my opinion.

Thanks Lickety and Pippin. I knew the Frenchies were involved somehow up there. And I didn't listen much in school.

I been to Canada one time, on the sly, went to camp in Northern Minnesota, and we took a canoe trip up into Canada. Didn't cross any border patrol or nothing, it was all wilderness. One of the highlights of my life, very wonderful scenery and pure clean water. We could drink it from the canoe and not get sick.

What's the coldest you have every been in, in Canada?

What is the longest span of days you have gone with the temp below freezing?

Both questions to your area you live in Lickety, not Canada as a nation.

Is it true that littering is the most heinous crime in Canada? Canadian Bacon is my only reference here

Do you really leave all your doors unlocked all the time? While you're home makes sense, but what about when you are gone?

One of the highlights of my life, very wonderful scenery and pure clean water. We could drink it from the canoe and not get sick. Where in Canada did you camp? Was it Ontario and what lake were you drinking from? I personally would not ever drink lake water, nor would I swim in it unless it's absolutely necessary.

What's the coldest you have every been in, in Canada?I think it was 1999 January. The city of Toronto buried under snow, our kooky Mayor called the military to clear up the streets. I remember I went to work and thought how the heck am I getting home. Stayed overnight at my workplace (hotel) but it didn't seem so bad to me persanally. Driving was a disaster I recall people saying. I once was stuck in a heavy snow storm in March with no boots and my feet almost got frostbitten.

What is the longest span of days you have gone with the temp below freezing? It's not as extreme here in the city. I think the further North you are the cold and longer the weather is. Toronto is not usually known to have extreme weather for long periods. The winters can be cold and the temperatures drop below freezing in the winter months similar to the North east states...I 'd have to look up the longest span of days , I really don't have a definite answer for that one personally.

The most heinous crimes are the ones that we find are committed against children, and murder etc. Funny tho...I was in PA a few years back and some tourist got reamed out by a local for littering. The old man told the kid to pick up his garbage because they don't litter in Pennsylvania!

Do you really leave all your doors unlocked all the time? While you're home makes sense, but what about when you are gone?

Hahaha...come on now....City folks everywhere bolt their doors. Country folk tend to be more lenient. Nowadays no one should be leaving any doors unlocked anywhere., at anytime. I lock my doors when I'm home and have security on.

It's quite convenient (when it was snowing hard) that your workplace was a hotel, now, wasn't it? It'd suck if you worked in an abattoir.

I can not believe no one asked this all important question: What is the best Canadian beer?

Reply To this Message

Posted by: Sierradaddy

I'm Canadian, but not a beer drinker. Can't fathom the intrigue for other people... Like today, I had a Stella's (is that right? My brother ordered it for me...), and I thought it was the worst I'd ever tasted. So, I'm not the one to ask about beer...

About the "eh" thing... That's played up by Americans. There ARE places where that is said an awful lot, but not in the cities so much. They are really saying "hey", but they seem to be lazy and drop the "H" sound. I've never really said "eh", but I'm a Canadian of West Indian heritage, so we have our own "Canadian" accent and dialect...

YeP, drove them right to the reservations but at least they don't have to pay tax. They are exempt! I think we kept the Indian names for our cities and provinces. IE: Toronto (meeting place), etc. Saskatchewan probably has native origin names too.

Can you explain Boring, Oregon to me?
Reply To this Message

Yes. I've been there. It's named Boring because people settled there to bore into the soil. I can't remember for what. Minerals or oil or something. Anyway, it's not because the town is a real drag

Is your national news they show on T.V. everynight, mostly about Canada, or does it spend most of it's time on whats going on in the rest of the world?

Reply To this Message

I'd say its no different than what we'd see on one of your own local tv news channels. A mix of local news and pressing international news as well. Typical stuff. We see all of your networks, so we have pretty much the same format as they do. I grew up seeing regular nightly news broadcasts from places like Rochester and Buffalo, NY, and now with satellite tv and other providers that offer timeshifting, we can watch even the local Los Angeles news.

About the strange names, I think that it's really all relative. Chicago, for example, is based on an Indian word, as well as Michigan, Detroit, and Mississippi. There are tons of places and rivers (the Potomac is another example) that are given Indian names in the US. Other than a name like Saskatchewan which stands out mainly because its the name of a province, we don't really notice them, probably much like you don't notice that Chicago is of Indian origin.

First off, Whidden: I LOVE your avatar...can he get any sexier..is that the sexiest pic you could find?

I agree with SierraDaddy, our news is mostly a mix of local, national and top international news. I didn't know they aired Canadian news on U.S TV..or do you watch it on satellite? Over here I sometimes tune into ABC, NBC or CBS local news coming right from Buffalo, N.Y.

We have a movie industry out here. I don't think it's any good so I watch YOUR stuff.

It's a very watered down version on Hollywood. C'mon now..I know I should be proud and all but I can't figure out why I prefer American or even Brit TV better than my own homegrown stuff. I guess we just have to send our celebrities down South to make it big in the U.S.A.

Tune in to Canadian Idol and you'll see what I mean....(or Corner Gas even!)

While it IS true that MOST of us are not foolish enough to leave our doors unlocked, some people in some neighbourhoods do... for example, up north... My friend's parents used to live in Queensville, (just north of Newmarket), and they DID leave their doors unlocked--all the time, night and day... freaked me out!!! (I'm from Toronto. I lock my door to go to the garbage chute!)
